MOSCOW - Top-ranked Lindsay Davenport withdrew from the United States’ Fed Cup team Wednesday for its semifinal matchup against Russia due to a back injury.

Wimbledon champion Venus Williams will now lead the U.S team.

“It’s a little bit unfortunate,” team captain Zina Garrison said. “Lindsay was playing against Venus in the (Wimbledon) final and she came over with an injury. There’s something wrong with her back.”

Mashona Washington, making her Fed Cup debut at age 29, will be the U.S. team’s No. 2 singles player.

“She (Davenport) has been very supportive of the Fed Cup and she’s apologized to the whole team as well as to her country for not playing,” Garrison said. “It’s just a really unfortunate situation because she’s been such a leader for each and everyone in this team and she really wanted to come here.”

Jill Craybas was called up to play doubles with Corina Morariu.

“Now it will be a bit easier for us,” Russia’s No. 1 Elena Dementieva said. “The (Wimbledon) winner and the runner-up in one team — it was too much.”

Williams defeated Davenport in the Wimbledon final last Saturday for her 13th Grand Slam title — and first in four years.

“I think the most important part of that is I knew I was going to play a few months before, and mentally I’m already ready to be here this week,” Williams said. “I play in the Fed Cup as much as I can. I love to be in the team environment because it’s just something you don’t have in tennis.”

The United States beat Russia in all four previous meetings. The two nations last met in the 1999 Fed Cup final on a hard court in Stanford, California. This year’s matchup is indoors, on clay.

Russia beat France in Moscow last season for its first Fed Cup title. The United States has won the competition 16 times.

The draw for the tie will be held Friday. Singles matches are set for Saturday, followed by reverse singles and a doubles match Sunday.

The winner will face either France or Spain in the final on Sept. 17-18.

Why can't Venus play doubles with Corina? Her style is a lot like Lindsay's. I just don't see where our third match is coming from. Mashona Washington vs Top Ten Player is NOT good.

Not blind. Not uninformed. We are party to atrocities. But the response of the world after 9/11 is worth noting. Even our most dire enemies offered aid. We should all be so lucky.

She can, and she will. If it matters.

Mashona on clay = not too good.

Russia might have the edge now.

I think that it is great that Mashona is given this opportunity at the age of 29, old by tennis standards. Whether she can muster up all of her talent and produce a win remains to be seen, but stranger things have happened. Go Mashona!!!

Honestly, Jill is better at clay than Mashona this year!

Thats true. I think Jill may play singles on day 2 and Venus/Corina will probably doubles if it matters.

I think Mashona deserves to play the singles over Jill b/c she has been the better player overall for the last year and think she is more likely to pull an upset.

US will probably have to win the doubles now and need Venus to win both matches.

Craybas is 18-18 on the year, and 6-7 on clay. Washington is 14-15 on the year, and 2-5 on clay. But it is true that Mashona has some momentum

I would definitely go with Venus for a decisive doubles match, if that's an option. If Venus can't play two matches in one day (due to any physical problems), I would pull a switch for singles #4, putting Craybas in there and Washington in the doubles.

I wouldn't expect Mashona to do much against top players on clay. But she is higher ranked than Jill and has more firepower, and thus the proverbial "puncher's chance". Either way, we're looking at Venus-Venus-Doubles as our best chance of a win.
