The Super Maria Sisters are my favourite doubles-team, even though Big Maria is a member of my eternal fanship while Little Maria is just outside it. I was there when they won the Birmingham 2004 doubles-title together, and I have one of my photos of them on my mouse-mat!
Unfortunately for the partnership, Big Maria rarely plays doubles because she expects to reach at least the semi-finals in pretty much every singles-tournament she plays, and needs to conserve her energy while she's still trapped in the frail body of an 18-year-old girl.
The Super Maria Sisters are each other's best friends, so they often practise together, and are each other's first choice for a doubles-partner. Obviously Little Maria usually has to make do with other doubles-partners.
Birmingham was Big Maria's first doubles-tournament since September 2004, when she teamed up with Vera Zvonarëva (another member of my eternal fanship) at Beijing (they were also runners-up at Memphis in February 2004). Big Maria has teamed up with other players such as Tamarine Tanasugarn (with whom she won the Japan Open in October 2003) and Gisela Dulko.
But I'll be surprised when I next see Big Maria play doubles with anyone other than Little Maria.
