This Year Maria Has Lost To Winners!

At the Aussie Open Maria fell to Serena who won the title; Maria fell to Justine in the French; and Venus at Wimbly. So though the rich/poor girl who does not perspire (due to her Palmolive deodarant she plugged relentlessly in the UK) has not won a major, she always fell to the Champion.

What is my point? There's a horrible but fortuitous saying in Britain: always the bridesmaid, never the bride. Even her new shiny husband last year soon went back to his previous flame, Venus. Aptly named after the very trophy! Is the divorce permanent?

She also lost to JHH twice in claycourt tournaments- or once other than the french. that's another time she's lost.

Let them eat cake.

But, it's bound to happen especially late in a tournament. Only 4 people left in the SF and 8 in a QF.

Really, don't even look at me...

Yeah, that's why I think it would be a bit unfair if she doesn't reach the 1st rank by the end of the year. Davenport just had more luck than her : she faced Venus and Serena in the finals, not in the semis and she had a cake-walk draw at the French unlike Sharapova (who would surely have reached the finals).
Of course, Davenport double-bageled Sharapova, but Sharapova won the YEC, Wimby last year and will never give up a match the way Lindsay did in the 3rd set of the AO finals.

I'm not saying Davenport doesn't deserve the first spot, just that both Sharapova and Lindsay deserve it. so it'd be a bit unfair, if Sharapova doesn't reach it before next year.

Apart from Schnyder on clay, Maria has lost only to former No 1 players this year. She has also managed to catch players like Serena, venus, Kim and Justine on their very best form of the year. Hence her losses to eventual champions.

As No 2 seed Mari had a shocker of a draw at the French, meeting the favourite in the quarters.

Maria caught Serena on her best form? PLEASE! Serena hasn't seen her best form since Wimbledon 2003. And actually, it's probably even longer than that...I'd say US Open 2002.

Really, don't even look at me...

That's right.. caught Serena Williams at her most devastating level of play at last year's YEC, and whipped Williams handily. You see it? I was there. All I could do was shake my head in disbelief... just, incredible.

lol..

Maria doesn't deserve #1 anymore more then Lindsay, period.
Maria had a much easier draw at both RG and Wimbledon, just look at quality points. Davenport had to play Clijsters in both 4th round, now go and check who did Maria play.
Maria is a great player, but since February her only title is Tier 3.
If she wins US Open, gets to #1, then yes, she belongs there.
Just like she'd be rightful #1 after Berlin, Rome, but she couldn't do it, even if it was on her raquet.

But she has plenty of time to reach #1 in the future.

Exacly, it was Maria who had an easy draw.
I guess, J&C expect Maria to play a top 30 players even in the QF!

Maria had an easy draw in Paris?

Maria, as 2 seed got the red hot favourite, and world's top clay court player in the QF! Quality points have little to do with matters when certain players are no good on clay and the best clay player has been off for a year.

Why date your list from February? A strange date to pick.

Oh. Before that she won a Tier 1 and a Tier2.

And after that was the clay court season. Maria's worst surface.

Speaking of cakewalk draws, Maria was essentially unopposed in her quarter at this year's Wimbledon.

Venus' quarter was LOADED, but with Justine's early departure and Serena's poor fitness to play, that side opened up considerably. If Serena had survived to the fourth round, Maria might have won. Serena would have lost to Venus, but Mary provided some great match preparation fo Venus.... Plus Venus would have been feeling bad for eliminating Serena. This might have been to case at NASDAQ this year. It would have been Serena's fourth straight if she won.

Addendum: Lindsay still DESERVES #1 in spite of no recent slam victorys.
She has put in the work like no other and has had great results for 12 months now.
