The 2001 women's final remains the last exciting final of Roland Garros.

Congrats to Justine but we did not really see a match today. Justine was just too good for Mary.
Last year's final was weak and the year before the match was over before Kim woke up.
Year before it was the sisters, the first time they met in a Slam final, I think.

So the last time I was on the edge of my seat was that final against Jen and Kim. I really hope we get a good final next year with a real fight, tragedy and a load of matchpoints. We got that this year but it was in the 1/8 final between Justine and Svetlana.

2000-2007: My "Kim years". My best years as a tennis fan. A few bitter losses but a lot of great matches and great wins. Thank you, Kim Clijsters!
26.03.2009: More Kim years to come!

I suppose if it's your favourite playing, you want them to win first, then hope it's a good match.

Mary is one of my all time favourites, but I never ever thought she could beat Justine. But sometimes you just never know.

If the match was a barnstormer the crowd would probably have booed anyway.

you are right she deserves to win without contest but the adversity (just kusnetsova was at her level) was out for different reasons .....and 2001 was the last good final with emotion, suspense and uncertitude...and before 1999.....for the same reasons...

Maybe it's just as well the finals are not too exciting or else you would be back on the cigarettes again! hehe

Oh, I did not so much start this thread to say that Justines did not have a lot of adversity. It's just that I always like it when a match is not too one-sided, and the last women's finals in Paris have been disappointing in that respect.

That's right!!!
Have you seen that movy called "Wild at heart". At some point Nicholas Cage lights up two cigarettes because his girlfriend tells him she's pregnant.
Well, when Kim played Jen in the final, at some point I forgot that I had a cigarette in the ash tray and lit up a second one!
