What Will This Do For Mary?

Win or lose the final, she's had 2 great weeks of tennis. where will she go from here? proven by her past slam wins, she doesn't get back up to that level again very quickly. could this time be different? other than the french this year, she has no other really good result, and after the french open of course, the clay season is over. will she contend for big titles again, or is this some sort of cloud nine experience for her where she won't be playing at the same level again for the rest of the year?

Hopefully she'll take advantage of her easier draws from her high ranking and be successful... she should do well on the fast hard courts and at the US Open.

Lindsay Davenport

Elena Bovina | Anastasia Myskina | Flavia Pennetta
Fernando Verdasco | Tommy Haas

Q. Give us an update on the kid.
A. Are you serious?

I do not believe she will be able to keep up her Roland Garros form. I see her returning to her form from the past year. Occassionally gets an upset win i.e. against Venus at Olympics and Sharapova at US Open. Other than that nothing special.

Mary supposedly in a different place in her life. Win or lose, she will probably become more of a threat on court.

If she stays healthy, I think she will definitely end the year ranked in the top ten. She will probably have a few good results, maybe a lucky run at the US Open perhaps, but it's a long shot to see her reach a second slam final after age 30. Of course, even this is a long shot, so you never know.

If Mary wins, they'll crown her Queen of Roland Garros and give her a wing at Versailles.

What did she do after her '00 win...nothing.

I haven't been that impressed with her play, Lindsay should have beaten her. But maybe she can prove me wrong in the final.

Be realistic - this is her swan song.
She will never make the quarters in a slam again.

Um, who has had better stats than Mary this tournament? No one. And considering Mary was in the positions up 4-0 in the first set and 5-0 in the second set, Id say that Lindsay had no chance.

azarenka - pavlyuchenkova - li - jankovic
garcia - bencic - paszek - rus - kanepi - kuznetsova - stephens
bouchard - karatantcheva - larcher de brito - voegele - lim - mladenovic

mary pierce - forever #1
vaidisova - kournikova - golovin - henin
the boys - federer - gasquet - del potro - haase - nishikori

Read this and then you might understand the dilemma why she hasn't had much of a success since RG 2000.

In 2000 she suffered right rotator cuff tendonitis in the summer, forcing her to retire in US Open 4r and withdrew from tournaments for rest of the year.
2001 - Retired during doubles match at Dubai due to tendonitis in both ankles and withdrew from Scottsdale and Indian Wells; withdrew from Roland Garros, Wimbledon, US Open and remainder of season due to chronic inflammation of the lumbar spine.
2002 - Season highlighted by QF finish at Roland Garros as a WC (l. to eventual champion S. Williams), her first Grand Slam QF in two years and stretching her match win-streak there to 11; ranked No. 132, was lowest-ranked player to reach Roland Garros QF since computer rankings began in 1975; plagued by abdominal strain in first quarter of season, returning to Tour at Sarasota; after 1r loss at US Open did not play for remainder of season.2003 - Returned to Tour in Auckland after four-month absence and recorded highest ranking during season at No. 32, her best since May 28, 2001.

I think this has been a massive effort and achievement from Mary.
She was really struggling at the end of last year, did she not lose in a tier 4 or something in Canada last year and everyone thought her days were numbered?
Venus take note!
