A Few Thoughts About Kuzzy

I saw her match today against Farina-Elia and sorta noted a few issues i'd like to share with you guys -
1. her forehand is her biggest problem. she used to have the whole pack, but since her forehand is such an explosion of power and speed, she uses it all the time - and like all power-moves, it's a winner or an unforced error. she lost her patience to wait for the right moment to hit it, and her backhand is not as good as i remembered it a year ago.
2. she moves really really well. she bulked up, but she's moving nicely and i think she should use the movement and try some down-the-line shots more often. her cross-court backhand is becoming really expected.
3. her second serve is rubbish. she used to have way more variety in her serve last year - in the USopen it was amazing. now, her second serve is really bieng attacked - sure, it's powerful, but it's always the same and good preparation sends it back as a winner.
4. she should come up to the net more often. she's a great doubles player, and she has very good volleys, drive and anguler (is that a word?). she comes up every now and then, but i think she should really go for some serve-and-volley, even on clay, since she could chipped some easy points even against a terrific counter-puncher like farina.

lastly, Smashnova and Silvia gave kuzzy some good clay practice - she should be able to take this as an advantage - if she keeps her patience, waits for the right time to hit it and varies with her serving and game plan - i really think she can give kim more trouble than she did a few weeks back.
i hope she can win this title, she looks better now, more concentrated and much faster than she did a few months ago versus mirza, i.e.
good luck girl!

if you have nothing important to say, please do so in non-tennis forum. if you have something you think is important, but is actually rubbish regarding anything other than tennis - please do so in the non-tennis forum. if you have something tennis related to say, but it's actually "OMG, X player is so h0t!1" or "who has the biggest boobs on the wtatour" please do so in menstennisforum, under "wta forum". if you have something important, tennis-related and interesting to say please do so. No one in the world can understand how much tennis means to someone, except another fan.

I was wondering the exact same thing.Kuzzy is a fantastic doubles player,so why the heck doesn't she come to the net more??She always seems to be stuck to the baseline in her singles matches. In her match in Dubai even though she was being totally overpowered from the baseline she never came to the net even once!Although to be fair, if you've seen it live, mirza's forehand is like a damn missile so i probably shouldn't be too hard on her for being apprehensive about coming to the net!I didn't see her match with Ivanovic, but i'm pretty sure she would've been stuck to the baseline again. She's gotta add a bit more variety to her game when things aren't going her way.I know she's good enough.I hope she can beat Kim tomorrow.I'm sick of all the naysayers saying that Kuzzy won the USO by fluke, and that she's gonna drop out of the top ten soon.Kuzzy's the real deal.Just show everyone girl!

I haven't seen her play since Beijing and I find it hard to believe that her second serve is being attacked and her Forehand is making lots of errors

She was soooo good last year.

Kuzy's game is definitly defined by how consistent her forehand is. If its dropping in, she can really beat anyone...if not...ouch.

Sveta often plays it safe on her second serve.
And she often goes for too much with her forehand.
Red clay should be a good surface for Sveta, because she loves to stay in her backhand corner and pound her forehand.

Yes she is a good doubles player but that doesn't necessarily mean she should come in more.. Do you Virginia RP come to net a lot in singles??

I'm not saying that she has to come in to the net all the time(And i'm def no VRP,but i'm no GS champ either!).She's a great baseliner. Its just that when her baseline style isn't working, she should try some other things, cos she definitely has the game. She relies too much on her forehand IMO,fab though it may be.I've seen her play doubles well, so i know she isn't all that horrendous at volleying. In that Dubai match, she didn't seem to have any answers at all when she came up against someone with a better forehand.

I agree with you guys totally and I posted a similar message about Sveta couple of weeks ago. Her forehand is huge when it's on and her movement is as good as Clijsters'. Her serve (first and second) is not what it was a year ago at the US Open. Still I expect her to beat Clijsters.

She was soooo good last year.

it's exactly that way - really, since i saw her (TV, that is) in the aussie open her second serve has lost it's touch. i remember thinking that she and molik should make the best second serve team i've seen in a long while - but sveta really lost it to her safe serving.
she's still serving Aces aplenty and some unreturnable serves, but she's bieng attacked on her serve way more often as well. and it's kuz! she's a serve rocket! it's just because it's so predictable that players can just hit the ball back with all they got.
as for her forehand - i think the errors is when she wants to improve the pace on it, and then sometimes she loses herself. she needs to wait for that death-blow of hers.

not ecause of her doubles game - she should come up more often IN GENERAL. the doubles wins and titles are just a pedigree that she can play well.
i really thought she'd have a chance to surprise evryone and take wimbledon in 2004 - i was kinda shocked that she left her S&V tactics.
she's more than an all around player - she's REALLY good on all of them. she's fast enough and her shots are hard and deep enough to go up to the net - i just think she needs to try it out.
her forehand makes her stay in the back. waste of talent.

I don't know about expecting her to beat Kim.I know Sveta is certainly capable of it,but Kim is in top from right now, and sveta is not. Also Sveta, as ive said many times before,is not mentally tough enough. If you want to beat the best you need that more than anything else. But I do want Sveta to win tomorrow.

Of all the Russian players, she has the most complete and sophisticated game, imo. I fully agree that she should make use of her great hands and volleying skills to get up to the net more.

She'll be lucky to win a set off Kim.
