Tennis: The Belgians are both back

Tennis: The Belgians are both back New Feature

The Associated Press, Reuters
Tuesday, April 19, 2005
BRUSSELS They were down, and considered as good as out, just a few months ago.
.
Now, with injury and illness behind them, the former top-ranked Belgians Justine Henin-Hardenne and Kim Clijsters are raking in the titles again.
.
"We're both back and this is very good for tennis," Henin-Hardenne said after she won the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, South Carolina, on Sunday in only her second tournament since being sidelined for months.
.
Henin-Hardenne's 7-5, 6-4 victory over the second-seeded Elena Dementieva came on the heels of consecutive tournament victories by Kim Clijsters.
.
Clijsters missed most of 2004 with a wrist injury but has won two of her three tournaments this year, including last month's Nasdaq-100 Open in Miami, generally considered the fifth major on the tour.
.
She is already riding a 14-match unbeaten run.
.
"During our absence, some said we were finished, burnt out, over the hill. We proved it was totally wrong," Henin-Hardenne told the Brussels daily Le Soir. "I'm very happy and proud about that, and Kim should be too."
.
The two victories put Clijsters back up to 17th after dropping to below 100. On Monday, Henin-Hardenne went from No. 43 to No. 22 in the rankings.
.
The Belgian press is quickly reverting to the days of 2003 and 2004, when the media routinely splashed the players on the front pages and on the top of the newscasts.
.
For the last few weeks, broadcasters have rescheduled their programming, showing live coverage of the two as they upset the odds and kept on winning.
.
Henin-Hardenne and Clijsters are not close friends off the court
.
"We were almost born in the same place," Henin-Hardenne said. "We almost have the same age. We have a lot of things in common. But we have very different kinds of personality, so I think that's very good."
.
Henin-Hardenne has used her enforced break to work on her game, including her serve.
.
"I proved a lot of things - that I'm back, that my game improved so much," Henin-Hardenne said. "So I'm very happy about that."
.
Both Belgians will play the J&S Cup in Warsaw next week to continue their preparations for the French Open.
.
They faced each other in the final at Roland Garros in 2003, and Henin-Hardenne made it a Grand Slam double that year by adding the U.S. Open.
.
In 2004, she won the Australian Open before she was hit with a blood disorder. She briefly came back to win gold at the Olympic Games , but was out for most of the rest of the year.
.
.

Allez.

Just one question:

What off-his-rocker knucklehead even HINTED at either player being anything close to washed up?!

JESUS

The transgression of the wicked saith within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes. Ps. 36:1

The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Ps. 14:1, 53:1

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. Prov. 1:7

...Behold, the fear of the LORD, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding. Job 28:28

Henin's serve has definitely improved. It's awesome to see a 120 mph serve coming out of her player her height .

Hans Van de Weghe in De Morgen. He said it clearly in one of his saturday editions. Justine and Kim would never return to the number one spot and they would never be the same players. At the time I was convinced he was not correct about Kim, but I was not sure about Justine, because Justine had a burn-out.

The fact that Kim was destroying everybody must have stung Justine, because there was already a lot of more fight in her during her last tournament. In Miami Justine only had one set of fighting in her against Maria (and then it was already enough to win that set), so I am not sure that Maria is going to outplay Justine if Justine is determined to fight from the start. I already saw that in the demonstration game that they played at the end of 2003. At the beginning of that match Justine didn't really want to fight too much, but Maria blew her off court. The public was amazed at what was happening. Justine was not at all amused and Justine became the fighter Justine and eventually Justine won that match.

Her serve didn't improve.

She plays with another racket that is lighter and stronger.

It improved!
If you were watching her serve in 2003 and 2004, you would notice that now she varies the direction more!!

Why aren't either of them playing Fed Cup?

Justine decided last year never to play Fed Cup again.

Kim wants a lighter schedule this year.

It's really a shame because they've always been touted as these two major stars on the tour from a tiny nation, and they both decline to answer the call to play for thier country!

"Hatred is the coward's revenge for being intimidated" - George Bernard Shaw

"And for the best of the teen-agers who followed her, and who occasionally referred to her as over the hill, Graf had a ready answer: against top-ranked Martina Hingis, Graf wound up 7-2. Graf's stirring 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 throttling of Hingis at the French Open final this June was perhaps the most emphatic parting shot the game has ever seen. "

After the year they had it's already fantastic to have them playing tournaments again...Fed Cup isn't that prestigious anyway...As a Kimfan I'm happy she isn't playing this weekend; as a Belgian I couldn't care less; as a tennisfan it's a pitty I don't get to see Belgians vs. Lindsay/Williams...but I'm sure that if they all stay healthy we'll have many of these matches at the Slams
