euhm Justine came back from injury, played only two tournaments: one tough loss in the quarterfinals of a Tier I against Sharapova, and a Tier I win.... you call that moderate performance?

Compared to Kim.

Some people were saying that Justine would come back and soar straight back to contending for No 1.

.... Kim lost in her first event in the Quarters just like Justine did. In fact justine lost in the quarters of a tier 1 while kim lost in a tier 2. Justine in her second tournment (just like kim) won a tier 1 event. So really there is no difference between the two. An argument can be made for Kim's coming back being a little better since she beat so many of the top players but what Justine did was just as imprseeive to me.

Team Williams
Princess of Power: Serena Williams
21 time grand slam champion, Tours best fighter, Olympic Champion
Queen of Grass: Venus Williams
7 time grand slam champion, Olympic Champion,
The Tour Standard! .... still haha!

Exactly.

Mind you, Kim's Tier Is are bigger than Justine's FamilyCup so I think they are evenly successful with Kim played one more than Justine.

Justine Henin

Thank you.

In fact it would be more accurate if you divide the race points by tournements played, it gives a 'slightly' better reflection of the success.

Justine Henin

Thank you.

How can you say Sesil's had a shocker - she's above her ranking at #64 in the race at 15 years old in her first proper year on tour.

This web site attempts to keep track of who did well last week and for all of 2005 by looking at how rankings have changed. It's just my guess at a way to compute who is doing 'well' and 'not so well'. If you scroll down a little you'll see the tables for all of 2005.

http://www.mfwweb.com/tennis/RM04/

According to the 'numbers', the players doing well so far this year are:

Sania Mirza, Yoon Jeong Cho, Shahar Peer, Elena Baltacha,
Ana Ivanovic, Evgenia Linetskaya, and Nicole Vaidisova

If you've been following tennis, you don't need numbers to come up with most of these names.

I don't quite agree with several assessments, but two that stand out to me, for instance, is Samantha Stosur and Elena Baltacha.

While they performed well in Australia, neither player has done spectacularly since then, so I would move them into the moderate category.

And while Conchita Martinez may have lost early in her last two clay-court tournaments and was beaten by Lindsay at the Australian in the first round, she still had a spectacular winter hard-court season and in my mind, is performing well since she recently did win her first title in several years.
