Look at all previous winners bar myskina, all power players: pierce, seles, jen, serena, justine etc. Doesn't maria look like she belongs in this group? lindsay doesn't believe she kind do it on this surface, maria on the other hand believes she can walk on water, big difference!
if the FO was only won by players whose games were most suited to clay, hingis and amelie would totally own the event.
I cannot believe some of you give kim a higher chance of winning the FO than you do Maria.
maria serves well, attacks well, defends very well and most importantly she knows how to win the championship point at a slam!
tennisfan, I agree with the general thrust of your post. It's too early to say Maria has issues with the clay of Roland Garros.
But you must admit that the games of Justine and Kim are better suited to winning the French than Maria's. And that Jen and Serena, at the top of their games, have superior mobility and defensive skills (ditto Justine and Kim).
Meanwhile, as Kim showed us in the Key Biscayne final, Maria's current game shares certain crucial deficiencies with Lindsay's: one-dimensionality to the game, discomfort and confusion when being moved around, impatience at seeing winners float back to the baseline, reluctance to cut off points at the net, etc.....
Mary Pierce's win should give the current Maria the best hope. That's it for now. But the child may just improve several aspects of her game....
