Maria: number 1 before RG?

With Lindsay losing today and not playing till French Open, Maria has very realistic chances to take over the top spot before the French Open. She plays two Tier I clay tournaments in Berlin and Rome.

After Charleston Lindsay's rating will be 5169 and will stay the same through Berlin and Rome. After Strasbourg it will drop to 5105.

If Maria gets more than 85 in both Berlin and Rome (quarters at both should be enough) then her points from these two tournies will be added to 4718.

Thus, if she gets 451 in Berlin and Rome she will become number 1 after Rome. If she gets 387 she will become number 1 after Strasbourg, right before the French Open.

She never lost in quarters or in earlier rounds in 2005.
She was able to reach quarters in RG last year when she was a weaker player than she is now. So, clay is not that bad of a surface for her as some would like to believe. She is definitely capable of getting 387 in two Tier I tournaments and become the 15th number 1 in the Open era before the French Open.

Go Masha!

it would be great for Maria to be No 1.

But greater for her to win another slam soon!

Well, Maria hasn't yet proven herself on the red clay. I am not sure she can get all of those points before RG. I think her best chance at #1 will be during the hardcourt season because she didn't do all that well right after Wimbledon last year.

Maria will be the #1 or #2 seed in both the Tier I's, so she will hopefully get an easy ride into the semis. I hope she takes advantage and gets the #1 ranking before the grass season

Her US hardcourt season sucked last year, so she still has room even if she doesn't defend Wimby.

Anything may happen at Wimbledon. One unlucky day -- and she'll lose a lot of points. I would definitely prefer her getting number 1 before that. Then she'll put this accomplishment behind her and concentrate on winning as many Slams as possible.

Serena+Kim+Justine+Amelie it would be very hard. But hey, impossible is nothing, her consistency might even take her to her first clay title this year. :P

Even with #1 and #2 seedings she can draw Kim or Justine early!

I really hope so, I think Maria can atleast make it to 2 SF's in those tournamnets and get enough points for number 1 !! that would be great because the six weeks after that she has a lot to defend, QF in RG of course, but I'm hoping and guessing she will defend those points, not so mutch at Birmingham but it was a title, and after that Wimbledon of course, so becoming number one before that would be great, so she can consentrate on the slams !!

Go Maria !! you can do it !!

Or she may surprise us all and take the title at Berlin, then she will become No.1 by default.
