A tournament title in Auckland, quarterfinals in Antwerp, now the quarterfinals here with a winnable match against Vives or a semi-injured Dementieva...perhaps this is the year she finally fulfills her potential.
Sugiyama didn't play bad in this match. Katarina just took her out of her zone. Sugiyama just loves to hug the baseline and Katarina had her anywhere and everywhere on the court in the first set. Katarina looked like she was going to do the same thing to start the second set but Sugiyama found a way to hold serve early and then katarina played into Sugiyama's hands. She didn't make Sugiyama run as much and Sugiyama was just hugging the baseline and started making it a hit fest. Katarina got frustrated and her coach was trying to get her out of the jam (yeah I know coaching isn't allowed while a match is going on but if you don't see it it didn't happen). Katarina found a way to play like she did in the first set and ran away with the match.
