huge fan but c'mon, she's playing out contracts x commiting to exos

she still can't practice without pain and can't beat martina in 3 attempts, not to mention being whipped in wtt (couldn't get a game from players outside top 200

feel for her, only dissappointed she has not kept her word to her fans and made a decision x aus open 2005,

lets face it, no one makes a comeback after 2 yr absence at the age of 31, esp when still not fully recovered - not to mention never being the swiftest of players when young

Unfortunately, I totally agree.

I tend to think Monica BADLY wants to play one last tournament for her fans and for her own memories. She said she didn't want to go out like that, with a 0&1 thumping at Roland Garros, scene of her early triumphs.

But realistically, I think she's waiting and waiting for something that her body just won't allow to happen. She could go on court and make an utter fool of herself, but will that do her any greater justice?

If she's not back by the French, I really do think that's it - and I hope she announces it soon afterwards, so that we can all pay her the respect that she fully deserves.

I think tributes will come pouring in, from both ATP pros and WTA players alike.

That's the most depressing post for any Seles fan to have to read.

Monica isn't coming back. I hate to say it, but it just wouldn't make any sense. I think she should call up Steffi and the people at the Us Open and arrange an exo right as the Open starts.

That would be a great opportunity to show she can still hit the ball one last time and for her fans, especially against her biggest rival.

I'm sure Steffi would do it

Mary Joe Fernandez said that Monica was planning to make a comeback this year. She said that while Monica still can't practice intensively several hours a day, she can still hit for 90 minutes a day and be fine.

There's no reason Mary Joe would lie like that. Monica isn't just avoiding saying she's done. She may just be waiting until Roland Garros time. Monica said that once she comes back, she'll give herself six months to get her form back. If she doesn't have it back by then, she'll quit. If she does, she'll play a limited schedule through '06 and then quit.

However, if Monica does comeback, she needs to go slowly. I think this should be her schedule for the second half of 2005.

Rome
Roland Garros
Wimbledon
Los Angeles
Toronto
New Haven
Filderstadt
Philly

2006 retirement schedule
Australian Open
Tokyo
Indian Wells
Miami
Charleston
Rome
Roland Garros
Wimbledon
Los Angeles
Toronto
US Open
Filderstadt
Zurich
Philadelphia

Quite honestly, I don't think her body will allow a full 17 tournament schedule at this stage.

I don't see that happening, but I'd pay big bucks to be there if it did!

Until she announces officially that she's "gone", I will always have a sliver of hope that she'll play again.

I'd like to see Monica in another exhibition match against Steffi - in Germany (let's say Berlin ...).
It would be a great day for both. Definitely.

I didn't hear her say that, but I am more convinced than ever that Mary Jo knows something about a Monica return. She always manages to bring Monica into the conversation during a match and she always refers to her in the present tense as a tennis player. They are good friends, afterall, so she would know.
