Amelia Island 16's - Random thoughts

01 USA Davenport
Q_ CZE Peschke
Q_ CZE Domachowska
05 USA Williams, V
The Williams-Davenport QF has an air of inevitability to it, given that they're playing Qualifiers. Williams has the better clay court record, but this would be, if it occurs, a matchup of the green clay winners from last year.

03 RUS Myskina
15 JPN Asagoe
11 SCG Jankovic
07 RUS Petrova
Any of these four players could wind up in the semis. I'd hope Myskina could get her ass on straight, but I've read rumors of an injury. Petrova is the athletically gifted of the four. So why do I think Jankovic makes the semis?

06 RUS Zvonareva
09 RUS Likhovtseva
13 JPN Sugiyama
-- FRA Razzano
Any of these four players could wind up in the semis. (Where have I heard that before?) Likhovtseva should beat 96 Tears. Who knows what's happening with Sugiyama? Take Razzano and the points.

08 SUI Schnyder
12 ITA Farina Elia
14 FRA Pierce
02 USA Williams, S
Clay gives Pierce a chance to load up those slow backswing, big follow-through groundstrokes. She can still go power for power with anyone on tour, if she has time to set up. It's hard to imagine Williams losing, but mothers might want to turn off the sound if impressionable children are in the room.

Schnyder SHOULD beat Farina Elia. But her inability to play to 'should' is why Schnyder isn't a top ten player. Schnyder has beaten Williams on this surface. In 2002, during Serena's run.

intresting.
imo
davenport VS petrova
pierce VS zvonareva
you just never can tell though.

if you have nothing important to say, please do so in non-tennis forum. if you have something you think is important, but is actually rubbish regarding anything other than tennis - please do so in the non-tennis forum. if you have something tennis related to say, but it's actually "OMG, X player is so h0t!1" or "who has the biggest boobs on the wtatour" please do so in menstennisforum, under "wta forum". if you have something important, tennis-related and interesting to say please do so. No one in the world can understand how much tennis means to someone, except another fan.

And we all know that qualifiers are just draw fillers, only slightly above Bye.

One can only hope Venus and Lindsay both decide to bring their 'A' games, and wrap up in 45 minutes.

NOTE: Peschke is 29, yet she and Lindsay have never played

NOTE: Domachowska has some decent wins.
R32 '04 Linz, #21 Zulaga 6-1 6-7 6-4
R16 '04 Spot, #20 Smashnova-Pistolesi 7-6 6-1

Peschke also has some decent wins: Clijsters (early on but still Clijsters); Pierce (while top 10 ranked); Tauziat (while top 10 ranked); Likhovtseva etc.

I hope Serena's still playing like she did in Miami [she wasn't playing well even before the semi] and Mary can get a big win this year and if she beats Serena I think she'll make it to the final again... pity she has such an awful draw whilst Farina Elia/ Schnyder and Sugiyama/Razzano face off.

Lindsay Davenport

Elena Bovina | Anastasia Myskina | Flavia Pennetta
Fernando Verdasco | Tommy Haas

Q. Give us an update on the kid.
A. Are you serious?

The point was that your reasoning didn't make sense at all.

You said "Venus vs. Lindsay is (more or less) inevitable". I could agree with that, although Marta D. has already proven us wrong.

You said "because they are playing qualifiers". Nope.
Would Lindsay vs. Venus been less inevitable with seeds Sprem and Frazier playing them now? No, as the first is slumping and the second is bad on clay.

So Venus vs. Lindsay has been "inevitable" since the draw came out.

I'm sure it's a persistent problem. Please feel free to skip my threads.

Petrova is athletically superior for sure. I don't know quite what it is that is stopping her from taking the next step. She hasn't won a title and seems to be a bit of a perennial last 16/QF type player. I haven't seen many of her matches lately but I think Jankovic will win.
