Maria will move to a career high of #2 in the next WTA rankings!
4th April 2005
When the new rankings after Amelia Island are released next week Maria will climb to a career high of #2 because Amelie Mauresmo reached the final there last year and isn't playing this year. Maria will have 4892 points to Mauresmo's 4808. Congratulations Maria!
amelie is gonna help maria here, she isn't defedning finalist points here, lindsay too has to defend her titlist points here too which puts maria is very good striking distance of no.1 over the next 2 or so weeks.
Look for Shaparova to become #1 before the grass season. I don't think Lindsey is going to play a full schedule so it'll be tough for her to maintain that ranking and Sarina is playing too few tournaments. Venis likewise. Miskina, Damentiva, Kasnutsova can't consistently win tournaments with the other girls around so they'll stay #5-10 positions.
So it's all up to Maria Shaparova to carry that ranking for most of this year.
I think Serena still has a shot if she plays well. She went out in the QF at Amelia last year so she has a chance to get alot of points of she wins the title or makes the finals. She also added Berlin to her schedule again which will help her gain, and she didnt win any clay events last year....
Mathematically speaking... her chance to be #1 before Roland Garros:
If she could win both Berlin and Rome, her ranking points will be around 5500.
Reach both final around 5300, and 5100 for SF.
And then it will be depend on how well Lindsay and Serena play before RG.
Mauresmo won't be a threat since she won both in 2004, and reached QF in Warsaw.
