Asagoe downs Washington in three sets

Shinobu defeated Mashona in three tough sets 7-5 4-6 6-4 to go into round two where she is likely to face either Raymond or Obzilier.

Well done Shinobu - its a good win especially as you have 4R points ar Roland Garros and Wimbledon coming up!!!!

@ Mashona. She was up 30-0 on her serve at least twice in that 3rd set before getting broken each time

Great win Shinobu..she is really starting to act like the top 25 player she is..but clay isnt her best surface so I dont see her doing so well in this tournament..but even winning this is good

fuck.

Why is everybody saying Shino is such a bad clay court player? She beat Hantuchova, Schnyder, and Dulko to reach the fourth round of RG, has reached the semis of Acapulco, and has a win over Myskina on clay. It's not her preferred surface, but she can play on it. Nice to see her gut out a good win though!!

Poor Mashona though Her carriage has definitely turned back into a pumpkin. She's 1-7 in main draw WTA matches this year, on a six match losing streak, and hasn't beaten a single top 100 player since she reached the finals in Tokyo back in October.

Congrats Shinobu!
Thanks for pointing that out Bradshaw#1, I mean honestly just because it's her worst surface doesn't mean that she can't rack up wins on it (e.g. 4R FO). She'll definetely be a favourite to get to the 3R and then vs. Myskina: who knows? Myskina has been playing badly and Shinobu's beaten her before. Here's hoping for Shinobu!

YAY for Shinobu!!! Mashona

Btw, Jonny, yes Shino has 4th round points at RG to defend, but she lost in the 1st round at Wimby last year (to Raymond) after reaching the 4th round (and beating Dani) the year before. She has QF points to defend at the USO!! Go Shin!

Mashona

I'm so impressed with Shinobu's rise in the rankings. She has a ton of points to defend at Roland Garros this year, with some amazing wins, but I think she can do it, especially now that she will be seeded. It's quite possible that she will become Japan's #1 especially with Ai's crap form.

Has Ai been #1 since Date's retirement? Or was it Naoko?

Mashona Really in a slump right now, I just hope she can pick up some wins soon to get her confidence back on track. When you're new to the top 100 it's so easy to fall back into a slump and stop believing you actually belong there. Hopefully she will hang tough and get things back on track again soon.

What slump? Her game isn't made for clay. She hits hard and flat and can create wacky flat winners off her forehand and backhand. All she can hope for is good results on clay in doubles and hope that translates to confidence in singles on clay. Maybe if she gets some more court awareness she'll play better on the dirt.

I like both players, but, great win Shinobu. Come on Mashona, you have to start playing like late last year!

The clay season just started - She's been on a losing streak since Melbourne losing 5 matches on hardcourt/indoors, this is now her 6th loss, and the first since the loss in Melbourne where she managed to even win a set.
