A left hip injury has forced fourth-seeded Elena Dementieva to withdraw from this week's Bausch & Lomb Championships in Amelia Island, Florida. Dementieva, who won her first career tournament title at Amelia Island in 2003, said playing successive tournaments at Indian Wells and Miami took a toll on her sore left hip.

"I’m very sad not to be playing the Bausch & Lomb Championships this year, but unfortunately my hip doesn’t feel good after the two tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami," Dementieva said in a statement. "Amelia Island is a place I always enjoy coming back to, especially since I won my first title there in 2003. It’s an excellent event and I sincerely hope I can be back there again next year. I wish everyone there well."

The fifth-ranked Russian was scheduled to make her sixth consecutive appearance at the Bausch & Lomb Championships. On the road to her 2003 win at Amelia Island, Dementieva upset seeds Amanda Coetzer, Daniela Hantuchova, Justine Henin-Hardenne and Lindsay Davenport to become to the tournament’s lowest seed (No. 10) to win the coveted trophy. She reached the quarterfinals in 2001 and 2002 as well. Dementieva holds four career singles titles and is currently ranked No. 7 in the world.

The 2005 Bausch & Lomb Championships boasts a competitive field that includes No. 1 in the world and the tournament’s defending champion, Lindsay Davenport. Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Anastasia Myskina, Vera Zvonareva, Nadia Petrova, Conchita Martinez and Mary Pierce also headline the tournament’s field.

Tickets for the 2005 Bausch & Lomb Championships are now available. For daily ticket, box seat and package information, please call (800) 486-8366 or visit the tournament web site at BLChamps.com.

Ouch, too bad. But you can't play with an injury...
We'll see her again next week then!

Thank you, Elena

I wonder if she'll hang around in the U.S. to play the FCC.

There you go. Another one "saving her gunpowder"

Get well soon, Elena.

A single flow'r he sent me, since we met./All tenderly his messenger he chose;
Deep-hearted, pure, with scented dew still wet - One perfect rose.
I knew the language of the floweret;/'My fragile leaves,' it said, 'his heart enclose.'
Love long has taken for his amulet/One perfect rose.
Why is it no one ever sent me yet/One perfect limousine, do you suppose?
Ah no, it's always just my luck to get/One perfect rose.

A pity. Elena here had only one point to defend so would have been a good chance to gain some valuable ranking points - but Elena get fit and well soon!
