The Big Four vs. The "Other" Four

for a long time justine, serena, kim, and venus were guarenteed to be the last 4 standing in any event they all entered. they were dubbed "the big 4". a lot has changed and other players emerged. the 'other' 4, lindsay, maria, mauresmo, and alicia are actually doing better in the rankings thanks to health reason and more confidence in their games. which group of ladies do you think will have the most success this year, the big four or the other four?

the big 4
Serena-(13-2) (1 title) (the 2005 australian open champion) (ranked #4, YTD# 2)
Kim- (16-1) (2 titles) (She was the lowest-ranked player (133) ever to win a Tier I singles title at Indian Wells and the first unseeded player to win in Miami) (ranked #38, YTD#8)
Venus- (10-4) (0 titles) (the only player on tour that has played kim and not lost a set to her and to beat serena in straight sets this year) (ranked #9, YTD #22)
Justine- (3-1) (0 titles) (after a 6 month layoff, she was able to comeback and reach the QFs of Miami, equaling her best effort there) (ranked #40, YTD #?)

the other 4
Maria- (17-2 record) (2 titles) (has not lost before the SF in any event entered this year) (ranked #3, YTD #3)
Lindsay- (19-3 record) (1 title) (hasn’t lost before the finals in any event she’s entered this year) (ranked #1, YTD#1)
Amelie- (18-5 record) (1 title) (reached back to back finals this year winning the second over venus) (ranked #2, YTD #5)
Alicia- (19-5 record) (1 title) (including the Hopman Cup, she has won her first 12 matches of the year) (ranked #8, YTD #4)

maria is clearly in a class of her own.
Lindsay has become a perrenial finalist, it must be beginning to get to her. She is now playing like she is second best to whoever makes the finals. Jankovich saved theday for her.
amelie is amelie, up one day, down the next, yu never know if you are going or coming with her.
alicia is the newcomer of the lot, will take a little longer to settle in.
but dementieva, muskina and kuzy are laying in wait

the former four are begin to look good now, kim back, serena is serena and a loss don't mean squat, she can lose one day win a slam the next.
venus is getting competitev and gettiing into conversations again, jsutine beat a top player already so if i have to choose, i will say the former four!

Rena- a tennis great! 22 at striking distance.

Interesting that you picked out Alicia to fill out the ranks of the "other" four. I.e. not Elena D, Nastya or Kuzzie. I was wondering which one you'd pick. Still, Alicia is probably a better choice right now.

this was hard to pick for me. i think by the end of the year the other 4 will be better in the rankings. i also think they will have more titles. i think the big 4 will perform better in the slams though.

i picked alicia because she has shown the most promise this season. if i had a third option it would be the other rusians, kuznetsova, dementieva, myskina, and zveronerva. no one would pick them though, they haven't showed too much promise this season and that group doesn't have any major contendors, no gurantees with them.

How about the US 4 (Serena, Venus, Lindsay and Jen), the Russian 4 (Masha, Nastya, Sveta and Elena) and the Other 4 (J2H, Kim, Amélie and Alicia)?

No offence to Alicia, but LenaD, Nastya and even Kuznetsova should be there, the "other" group should probably consist of

Lindsay
Amelie
Maria
lenaD
Nastya
Kuznetsova

I don't think you could fit just four people in for the "other" and even if you did I would make it
Lindsay
Maria
LenaD
Nastya

Amelie out because she hasn't even reached the final of a grand slam in what...6 years? and Kuznetsova out because she's probably the worst of the top 4 Russians...and I really don't like her.

IMO we should be talking about a big 5: Serena, Venus, Kim, Justine and Maria. If they all regain top form it should be them against the rest. Anyone who'd want to make it the big 6, 7 or 8 (Lindsay, Momo, Alicia, Kuzzie?) would have to step it up!However, answering your question: I think the Big 4 will perform better this year than the other 4, barring injury that is

For me only Grand Slam results really matter and I see the Big 4 having at least 3 out of the 4.

I'll throw the Other 4 a bone (though in my heart a Williams will win Wimby and the US Open and I'm thinking the French isn't the best place for the Other 4 to shine - Momo )

If your fave's coach isn't Richard Williams, that's just her first problem...

No major contenders? Even though women from that group won 2 of the 4 majors last year? How is Alicia Molik (who has reached one Slam QF ever) a major contender, while Nastya Myskina and Sveta Kuznetsova (reigning Slam champions) are not?

I'm not sure the leading players can really be grouped into the Big Four and the Other Four at the moment, anyway. The Big Four's kind of old school, totally 2002-03: all four are in very different places right now. You can't analyse them together. I don't think there are any helpful groupings at the moment at all, actually - the tour's in a total state of flux.

you misunderstood me. nastya, myskina, sveta, and kuznetsova, as a group don't have any guranteed contenders, that's what i meant. anyone of them is interchangable with alicia, i just had to pick a fourth so i went w/the one who is doing the best this year.

the big four is total old school and that was the point. things are different on the tour now so i thought it would be interesting to see how that old group faired against the 'other' 4 strongest players on tour. i thought about adding lena d, but ended up w/alicia by a nose hair. while the 'big 4' will always be strong, i think the other 4 are more consistent on a weekly basis. i voted for them. there's still some question marks w/the big 4, for now anyway.

A class all her own?

I believe Serena, Lindsay (0,0) and Kim have all passed that class w/flying colors. She's hardly distanced herself from the field.
