Why can't Anyone take the number one ranking from Lindsay?

I'm of course am a big fan of Lindsay but Lindsay isn't playing that great. She's still been consistent as usual but she's lost in 3 of 4 finals. She was very close to making it 4 for 4 against Jankovic. The number one has been for the taking for about 6 months now. Why hasn't anyone taken it?
Serena's chances are getting lower to take the number one before Roland Garros after her performance after the AO. Sharapova has been consistent but how will she play against Clijsters, Mauresmo, and Henin-Hardenne on clay when the number one ranking is on the line? Mauresmo has had 6 chances in 5 months for the number one ranking and she's folded under the pressure each time.
Sharapova has a chance now after Amelia Island but with her lost to Clijsters today she has to hope that Lindsay is inconsistent. Lindsay will have to lose before the SF of Amelia Island to lose number one now. If Sharapova would have won she would have put pressure on Lindsay win Amelia Island for her to keep number 1. Lindsay's chances for keeping number one for another month is high now. So who's going to step up and take the ranking from her before Roland Garros? Or will she actually keep it because noone will take it from her?

Sharapova can't get to number 1 even if Davey loses in first round of Amelia.

Well Sharapova isn't playing for a while, but she may get it before the French.

i doubt if maria will get there now...............she'll probably have to hope for a least a semi at wimby this year and then she'll have more shots at it over the summer.........i just dont think she is going to outperform lindsay on the clay even if lindsay doesnt like the surface, its not exactly maria's cup a tea either

Number one in tennis is a perk. Players want titles and if Number one comes, great. If not give them more titles and they'll be happy.

If that's true what is going on then? Lindsay's playing good but she is no Hingis and she's been number one for about 5 months now.

Lindsay isn't playing that great? Gosh, how did she manage to double-bagel tennis's new golden girl then? Oh wait, it was the wind

Doubt it. The records for GS wins have been moved out of reach by Graf and Court. Titles only look impressive when you get to 30 plus. If Maria, her sponsors and the WTA are setting goals for themselves number 1 is the best one going for the near future and the opposition for it is very beatable.

so true, but all of Maria's endorsements are heavily tied to performance, I'm sure her bonus for getting to #1 is huge, so she definitely wants to get there.

If Davey goes deep at Amelia and FCC it will make the race even tighter.

Lindsay and Momo both need to send flowers to Kim

Her number 2 can't win anything big. Maria is still adding to her points which come largely from the second half of last year. Serena needs the French and is undermined by other interests, injury and a limited schedule even if you think she still has enough game. Kim needs another 3700 points and thanks to a ranking system that puts too much weight on GS she may need all 3 of the next GS to get there. Sveta is in a lapse. Myskina isn't getting to the right point in the draw to beat her again. Lindsay is winning enough tournaments and getting to enough finals to stay ahead of that combination.

Lindsay isnt playing great tennis, really. I don't know where she's at right now. Played like crap in aus to get to the final, needed to play well for like 3 more games and the title could have been hers but she tanked it.

OK, she was injured in Tokyo, but had a chance to win there.

Dubai Scraped through against Patty and Jankovic.

IW - She played OK, nothing spectacular except that semi (which I didn't see) And got beat by Kim in the final playing great tennis. Kim destroyed this weeks field so it was no disgrace losing there.

She needs to step it up, theres no doubt about that, and if anyone (including me) is to take her seriously again she needs to perfrom at the all england club - big serving, big groundies and hammer her opponents coming into the quarters and bring back the 2000 Lindsay.

Women's tennis sucks.
~

Go Rafa.

I'm just looking at Lindsay from last year. She won 7 titles last year. She was 7-2 in finals last year. She's 1-3 this year. I remember in 2002-2003 when Lindsay just could not win a final to save the life of her. She was 1-9 from 2002-2003 in finals. She was 7-3 in finals in 2001. Lindsay is the type of player that if she starts losing in finals over and over again starts to wonder if she can do any better than losing in finals. She wants to win not to just be a finalist which is why she considered retiring in the first place.
