Match Ups at the Top......

As I watched Justine battle Maria, I kept comign back the way they matched up.
I don't see Justine, as great as she is off the ground etc. having much success against Maria anywhere but on clay.
All Justines shots seem to arrive at Maria in the wheel house due to her height and Justines lack of.
The topsin forehands from Justine get to Maria at just the right height to smack!
So till they meet on clay where Justine can run her around a bit, I just dont see her making a dent.

It should be interesting to see if Kim, who moves very well and seems to have solved the hiccup on her forehand wing can frustrate Maria.
Thank the Heavens Kim is back.
Jen you need to hurry back as well!

Justine will play her way back into form eventually.

What was interesting about the match up with Serena with say Maria as opposed to Venus is, I think Serena rolls her groundies for angles, and her forehand is relatively stronger than Venus's.
I dont think anyone with the exception of Davenport can out hit or overpower Maria. So there is no point in trying to win matches that way, at least for the time being, until there is another transition in playing styles, and there always is.
Rest assured there are juniors hitting even harder than Maria on the horizon.

I say all this to say, its always interesting how stroke production affects results, and how little the so called "experts" on TV comment on it.
Especially the former tour players, who REALLY should know theses things.

Hmmmmmmm.... I think Serena can out hit Maria honestly. Did you see the YEC 3rd set first 4 games??? 'Nuff said. Serena has been playing too tentatively lately, especially when she plays the tougher opponents. It's hard to beat Serena when she goes for her shots. But when she's playing passively and not cutting angles and aiming for lines, she gets into trouble.

Really, don't even look at me...

I think we are in agreement about Serena's matchup with Maria though!

Did you see the Wimbledon final, and the rest of the YEC? 'Nuff said. Serena can't hit as hard as consistently as Maria. Maria's strokes are technically far superior to Serena's. Serena wins matches because she has good instincts, can smack the ball for winners, and can run really really fast. Maria wins matches because her strokes are very reliable and, simultaneously, powerful.

I think most top players could beat Maria by going for their shots, the problem is that Maria is the most consistent hardhitter with the exception of Lindsay and they keep playing the pace down the middle crap which is no way to beat Maria.

Good Luck in 2005 to:

Martina Hingis-Welcome Back!

Venus Williams-Queen of Tennis

Ana Ivanovic-Future Champion

Kim Clijsters-Darling of Tennis

Honorable Mentions: Dinara Safina, Justine Henin-Hardenne, Lindsay Davenport, Svetlana Kuznetsova. Good Luck Girls!

OK
Lets back away from the Sharapova vs Williams match up and discuss OTHER matchups.
Kim and say Amelie for eg? 6-0 6-1? WTH was that?
