Can Sharapova become one of the best ever ?

i'm not a huge fan, but i have to admit - she is one of the very few today that could very well become one of the best players of all time.
I realize it's too early in her career to speculate, but barring injury, barring her father, barring her media blitz.
She has *the* best game on court right now, hands down.

Ok people talk about how bad Venus game is to the point that any good player that can hit the ball across the court can beat her and then when she gets beat by Sharapova we get threads like this seems to me that Sharapova beating Venus should not be a big deal and yet she gets the win and you guys are ready to compare her to the best players of all time.

Of any of todays younger players, I'd have to give Maria the nod.

She has an excellent opportunity to become one of the best. However, until she's playing for her 20th + grand slam singles title (as I would say for any youngster), we'll have to wait about ten years to see how that culminates.

Consider that there aren't ANY teen American's in the top 100. When's the last time that happened????? Talk about weird. Why aren't younger American teens motivated today???

Maria has won one major. Lets wait until she wins 10 more, before we talk about the best players ever.

what makes you "one of the very best"?
winning each of the four slams in a career? bc then i think she has an excellent shot. 10 slams, 15 slams? then we're getting difficult.
it's too difficult to say, we're got a 17 year old on our hands. a lot can happen. she's certainly the best right now imo, and the only great player out there who will be playing several years down the line.

I don't think she has the best game of the current field.

I think Serena, Amelie, Kim, Lindsay, and Justine all have a better game that she has.

If Lindsay can double bagel her and Justine who hasn't played in 7 months stretch her all the way to a third set and save three MPs against her, her being best is suspect.

Maria has done a good job of developing her game, up until this point.
It's never easy. To get near the top, or to stay there.

I think Maria is going to win 4 or 5 slams, but I don't think she will be up in the double digits. She has the same problem that Venus and Serena have, they have to many outside interest. I also thik Yuri is pushing her a little to much right now. The kid may be 17 but she needs a break, she is going to be tired as heck torwards the end of the year.

I know it may seem that I don't like Maria sometimes, but I do. I just think to much preasure is being put on her to early. And a lot of it comes from her father if you ask me.

Considering what Maria has accomplished at her age, she could be well on her way at being one of the best, barring injury and other problems........

That 60-60 against Davey still puzzles me, otherwise I would tend to give that a nod. So, let's wait a bit; actually let's wait till she's 20 or 21, ie, three years hence.

Sharapova has all it takes to be the best - she has already won Wimbledon at the age of just 17 and then the YEC.

She came close to the Australian Open title (losing with 3 MPs against Serena in the semifinal - she could have taken out Davenport).

She has 9 tour titles before turning 18 - a really impressive number.

She needs to work on clay more as that is where she has not WTA titled but her other surfaces are good and she seems unstoppable on grass.

She is one of the best at the monent and I would not be surprised if she won all four slams and Wimbledon more times again.
