Ivanovic - put into perspective

Neutral tennis fans like me are simply shell-shocked by the hype around a young player called Ana Ivanovic.

She is #50 in the WTA rankings and has never beaten a top 20 opponent until now, IIRC (maybe she will beat Kuzzy today?). She is already 17 years and 4 months old however.

Tracy Austin won her first slam with 16.
Andrea Jaeger was #6 with 15.
Steffi Graf was #3 with 16.
Sabatini broke into the top 10 with 15.
Seles won her first slam with 16 and was #1 when she was Ana's age.
Sharapova won Wimbledon at that age.
Hingis had 3 slams under her belt and was #1.
Zvereva, Martinez, Manuela Maleeva, Anke Huber, ASV, Venus W. were top 10 already.
JenCap was 14 when she broke top 10.
Rinaldi, Bassett and MJ Fernandez were top 20 with 15.

What is this with Ivanovic?

To my knowledge no one has hailed her as the next no.1 or anything.....just stating that she does have a nice game...

The question should be: How can someone consider enna their 3rd greatest or best player when she doesn't even have a wimbledon title?

She's nowhere near as hyped as Golovin, Vaidisova and Karatancheva. Get a grip.
And not everyone wins Slams and big titles at the age of 15.
While hyping a young player certainly is annoying, it's just as bad as idolizing and obsessing over those "so talented, graceful, charming, determined, could-do-no-wrong blah blah blah" players, which so many people around here seem to be doing.
And yes, she has beaten a top 20 player, and just 2 days ago. She beat Petrova.

As stated before me, she 's been on the tour for just a few moths and has only played one slam, going 3rd round in Australia.
Her physical talents are huge and she seems to posses high IQ. She is tall and strong and runs the court very well.
But her mental aspect of the game is very developed too.
She doesn't get too high or low on her self and seems very level minded. In fact she inspires confidence

And she is far from hyped from so called experts and pundits for some reason. In fact if you look at some of these reports after she defeated Vaidisova, she is barely mentioned

Those of us who have seen her play such as myself have seen something that makes us think she can really be a good tennis player

No one told that Ana is the best and that she would be No1. But...

At the beginning of the last year she was No705, and noone know for her until October when she wasn`t in top200, and she won four str8 matches against top50 girls. After that she is even better and she had never lost match against girl who was worse than her at WTA list !!! She played first serious tournament in Zurich only 5 months ago.

She is not best, but she is one of the new faces, with Vaidisova, Kirilenko, Golovin, Karatancheva, Mirza... No one of them hadn`t beat her and she proved that she is better than Vaidisova, Golovin and Kirilenko (twice).

Maybe other had reached top20 earlier than Ana, but now that is harder, there are only two girls under 20 (Masha and Kuzzie) in top20, Molik has reached top10 with 24 years, and Ana is seven years younger than her.

And she is very pretty too.

Ana Ivanovic

Jelena Jankovic

Vojislava Lukic

Good luck to: Davenport, Srebotnik, Kirilenko, Kostanic, Mirza and Serbian DC squad (Djokovic, Tipsarevic, Zimonjic, Bozoljac, Pashanski and Troicki)

Yep...I was just thinking, "never beaten a top twenty player" couldnīt be right and youīre also right that she isnīt hyped at all...it may be that her fans hype her (which fan doesnīt), but you wouldnīt see a lot of her in tourneys, off court promos or newspapers. IMO a player is only "hyped" when people non-related to tennis take notice of her in any way and that hasnīt happened yet. Vadisova is the most hyped young non-top player, thatīs for sure:

I could write and essay on how silly that post is. But in a nutshell - this is 2005 and the game of tennis has moved on.

Women's tennis sucks.

The proof that she is really good is that she has a 1st big hater in you.
If she wasn't that good, why would you care?

I think it has alot to do with those photo's that have been
posted on this website, and the fact that our good Serbian regulars
who aren't known for being shallow or silly that already support
of other good tennis players have given Ivanovic the thumbs up.

Some people on this board are just plain cruel. Scorpioo : I don't think anything in Calimero377's post would make us believe he/she is a *hater*. I'm sorry, but you are just trying to cause trouble in here.

His questionning was legitimate and done in a manner that a lot of people in here are simply unable to demonstrate.

I think you should check some other threads and read some nice comments like "the "young hooker" style á la Ivanovic" by Calimero

haha GOOD point!!! I think its unfair when people say a player isn't THAT good when they haven't won a slam by 17. Everyone develops at a different pace. And anyway, Ana already is very good, her results are shoiwng that. I've only seen her once, against Momo at Dubai, and she looked really good and very promising to me!!
