To play doubles or not to play doubles?

THAT is the question.

Should the top players play doubles? I know a lot more top women play doubles than the top men. But there's still lots of top women who dont play doubles.

Reasons to play doubles:

- More match practice/fitness
- More money to be made!
- Build friendships

Reasons NOT to play doubles

- You could tire yourself out and play less well later in singles tournaments
- More opportunity to get injured

Why is it that the world never remembered the name of Johann Gambolputty de von Ausfern-

it would be fun if they play doubles, but it's not going to happen. For the most players who go far in the singles tournament it's difficult i think.

I voted other as it's up to them... I'd love to see them to play doubles often, though, but I rather doubles specialists should play doubles first before top players from singles!

I don't think they should play doubles. There are really only 3 reasons to this:

1) You get burnt out. As if playing 3 set matches in tiring heat wasn't enough, having to go out for another hour or so of doubles would be killer. Just ask Lindsay Davenport after the Australian Open this year.

2) There is the factor of being injured. As stated earlier, playing 3 set matches and then having to play doubles again really pushes your body to the limits.

3) Give other people a chance. There are certain people that play doubles and others that don't. There are also certain people that play doubles and specialize in doubles. If a top player who consistently does well in tournaments and gets a lot of prize money decides to play doubles and wins, they would be taking away from the person who depends on doubles for their income. It's like a CEO of a major company wanting to be a janitor also just for the "extra money." I mean, morally, it's not right or nice...

Sure there are benefits to playing doubles, like better volleying skills and footwork, but you can do that while you're training also. It's not totally necessary that you play doubles competitively.

No, I don't think they should play doubles. It can hurt their fitness level at the major tournaments.

there were days when there wasn't as much depth in women's tenns when the top girls won their first 3 or 4 matches in under an hour. Nowdays the most one can expect is one or two easy matches. after that if you ant the title really badly, you better conserve energy.

Rena- a tennis great! 22 at striking distance.

They should play doubles only if they are willing to get drilled at the net. It's a great play in doubles and singles actually. I've gotten hit sooooooo many times in doubles, but revenge is always sweet.

Personally I enjoy watching doubles.

I agree that for players who are plagued by injury, they probably shouldn't play.

But I think doubles is a good way to build up parts of a players game that are often neglected, i.e. net play and volleying which is rarely plan A (or B or C) for most of the top players playing singles. I think doubles has helped players like: Serena, Veus, Kim, Lindsay, etc, all build up more complete games.

For most players I think it is good to see them play doubles, especially in slams where they have a bit more time. It really shouldn't effect a players fitness, unless their are playing alot of 3 set matches. For most top player (looking to play 7 singles matches at a slam, which only 2 actually do) they are usually involved in a couple of 'gimmie' matches in the first 2-3 rounds, where they can win almost on cruise control.

Obviously it depends on a player personality, style of game and state of health going into an event, but plenty of top players do play doubles without any ill effects.

Doubles is good to play - but hardly anyone in the Top10 plays regular doubles on a regular basis - it is good practise and a chance to get more matches and more prize money but it can complicate singles.
