Cool Miami Saturday Report and PICS (Venus, Serena, Dani, Alicia, Tati, Nadia, Ana)

Part I
Arrived at Crandon Park at 10AM today. Was able to park in the VIP area and not deal with the shuttle buses from the regular parking lot. First order of business was to see the Williams Sisters' early practice. I know Richard likes early practices and this was no exception as he was out there dictating the drills for his daughters. With the amount of people on the court (7) and the amount of people watching, this practice was more like a block party. When I was watching, Venus was at the baseline while Serena and a practice partner worked on their volleys. Kerry Brooks was ballgirl on her personal trainer's salary. Other members of the entourage were also there as was a HUGE crowd. Venus and Serena then switched places. Serena looked a little frustrated w/ her shots but probably because she has not waken up yet.

Part II

Next match was Tati vs. Angela Haynes. Tati looked smoking in her pink short skirt attire. We sat next to Angela's camp, who tried to be positive urge her on as she fell behind 0-6. This is the first time I have ever seen Tati play and I have to say that I was impressed. Pretty powerful groundstrokes and very consistent. Angela had problems with her serve in the first set but I guess she must have picked it up later to take it to 3.

Next checked out Gaudio vs. Phau. Phau sucked pretty bad and Gaston ran him all over the court only to finish points off with super dropshots.

Amelie vs. Masha K was next on the Stadium. The stadium was probably 30% full for this match. Both were wearing similar Nike Pink outfits. This was the first time I saw Masha K. play. She had awesome groundstrokes and often hit return winners on Amelie's 2nd serve. Amelie didn't play that great in the first set which was a break fest.

Part III

Next it was time to head over to the Grandstand, which I have to say is a HIKE from the rest of the facilities. If I were a player I would be to have to walk all the way there just to play a match. Big serving Joachim and the American Morrison were in a closely contested first set. Morrison scrambled all over the court and it paid off as he won the tiebreak and match.

Stopped to grab a bite to eat (lets just say that I found out Miami and US OPEN are very similar in rip off food ). Ran to Dani's match because she was down a set and 5-2 and managed to catch the last game. She looked lost out there and didn't really fight in the last game. Don't know what is wrong w/ her to lose to a player like Cohen Aloro.

Saw Dally and Klara warming up but didn't bother to watch them play

Part IV

Strolled to an outside practice court where there was practically nobody watching and found Alicia with her coach (David Taylor???). They were hitting from the baseline. He then told Alicia they would get a drink, after which Alicia hit from the baseline while he volleyed. I wished her good luck.

Saw some of Taylor vs. Victor. This match was . No rallies at all. Taylor really sluggish in first set.

Went to Nadia vs. Ana. Ana really didn't have to do anything special to win this match. She played solidly w/ good serving but honestly Nadia just self destructed . Not sure how she is ranked 12 and was ranked 6 with this sort of mental lapse.

Next was the showdown between Nicole and Jelena. Jelena came to the court WAY before Nicole for this match and was attached by autograph seekers. She willingly obliged and signed for them. Then was waiting around for 15 min before Nicole came to the court ... not sure what the issue was as players usually come together.

The last time I saw Jelena she lost to Masha in 3 in the 2nd round of the US OPEN. I expected more of Jelena after Dubai but was not impressed at all at her display. She is pretty much a counterpuncher w/ no real big weapon, just as she was 6 months ago. Nicole hit HUGE groundstrokes in this match and simply overpowered Jelena.

I was sitting next to several of Jelena's camp who complained loudly for close calls against her and threatened the chair umpre to no avail.

Iveta Benesova and other Czech girls (not sure who they were but if someone can recognize in this pic below please state) were in the audience to support Nicole. Iveta looked hoooottttttt.

I surprised you don't recognised Klara Koukalova from the audience with Kveta Peschke

Inspiration is for amateurs

Part VI

Back to the Stadium which was now 70% full for the Roger SHOW. Oliver played very well for someone his size but just was overpowered and outclassed by Roger. This was by far one of the most entertaining matches of the day as the 2 traded groundstrokes, lobs, dropshots, between the leg shots! I think the American crowd may finally appreciate Roger.

Dementieva and Lineskaya were next up. After the Roger match, the Stadium emptied out and there were probably only 2% full for this Russian match .
Elena threw in her first double fault on the third point of the match and her volleys were awful.

Finally went out to the Mardy / Tommy match which was played before a capacity Court I. Todd Martin was in the stands. Mardy had set point in the first set but hit a HARD return just out. Wanted to get in the Marat / T. Johansson vs. Taylor / Robby doubles match but impossible at this point because there was LONG lines to get in.

Players I saw walking around:

Moya (at Flavia's match)
Hrbaty
Henman
Ancic
Chela
Mary Joe

One of the great things about the NASDAQ is the player's lounge, which has an outside lounge area w/ tables and chairs where players congregate to socialize before and after matches or practice. I stalked this area whenever I walked by it and saw

Pierre Yves dressed in full Adidas gear sitting at a table w/ Justne's tennis racquets, talking on cell
Paola, Vivi at a table w/ Argentine guys like Canas and entourage
Denisa Chladkova w/ her coach
Arnaud Clement talking on cell
Rafael Nadal relaxing
Some blond girl that everybody thought was Anna but wasn't

I was initially dissapointed that on the day I would be going, Serena, Venus, Masha, Justine etc would not be playing but I think overall it was a good day of tennis besides for the fact that I got sunburned.

Here is a pic of me and my friends
