I might be wrong, but I think the only reason why Dubai and Doha are sponsoring events is because they want to make their countries better known worldwide.
I don't think there is any interest in tennis and neither is for the money, we know they could invest their money a lot more wisely.
it's known that Dubai wants to depend less and less on oil revenue and develop as a tourism destination and a financial hub for the Middle East.
Nothing wrong with it, but is the WTA getting anything out of it? better said, is women's tennis getting anything?
The point is that the events are not popular, it doesn't matter, but there is no much interest despite their status. Maybe the WTA doesn't have many choices but I wonder how long this events can go on without fan support.
The other matter is, another tier 1? it's getting ridiculous, really, there are 10 already, they should have kept the number in 9, they are actually lowering the bar with the tier 1s. If Dubai gets tier 1 status then 2 tier 1s should be dropped (because of San Diego).
