What's with Maria's grunt?

It's fucking annoying, that's what's with it. Why she's allowed to get away with distracting her opponents like that is nothing short of gamesmanship. She creates an unfair advantage for herself by that goddam awful shrieking noise a split second before her opponent attempts to return the ball. No wonder she wins so many matches. Tape her mouth up and see how she does then

I like her shrieks. It's her trademark now. It's not like MOnica was mute either. Any pro should deal with it and not let it distract your game. If that doesn't work start shrieking yourself but louder. IT might work

yeah, it's really annoying for me... and it must be annoying for the players that play her, unless they are really good at concentrating...
i think grunting helps getting her strokes right though although i don't think the shriek-continued-on-to-the-scream-because-i-just-made-an-error isn't very necessary...

Well all the players that have played her have said it isn't distracting. It comes with the territory of playing tennis. It's also a good indication of how good she's hitting the ball. You have the sound of the ball hitting the strings of the racquet and then the grunt. If she's a little off when she's hitting the ball, a player could hear it off her racquet and from her grunt and attack that shot that she didn't hit as well.

It sounded completely normal. Loads of players grunt and shriek. If they're not used to it by now, then it's their own problem.

Women's tennis sucks.

Go Rafa.

Sharapova's shrieks are pure Gamesmanship.

Some of you may want to look that word up in the Dictionary.

So what do you think about Serena and Venus' exhiliatory shrieks?????

Its all the same. And its not annoying to me. If it were a huge problem, she would be admonished like Seles was.

The use in a sport or game of aggressive, often dubious tactics, such as psychological intimidation or disruption of concentration, to gain an advantage over one's opponent.
i tend to take jokes or figurative speeches seriously...
