Cool First to win a CAREER slam

Who will be the first to put together enough Grand Slam wins in 2002 to acquire a career slam?(all 4 GS titles in a career rather than a calendar year)

1. Davenport - Needs RG win to go along with her Wimby, Open and Oz wins. Not an exceptional clay courter and knees are getting worse with age. Davey is not likely to get this 4th gem ever in her great career.

2. Capriatti - Needs Open and Wimby for the crown jewel and to do that she would have to probably defeat VENUS twice. Like that is going to happen.

3. VENUS - Needs the Oz and Roland Garros to have the Career Slam. VENUS is a slow starter and even though she could win RG, a quick start would be necessary to take Oz and the CS.

4. Hingis - Best and worst chance of most players. Needs only the RG and is a good clay courter, but seems to have lost her nerve in 2001.

In conclusion, the odds of fans seeing a Career Slam this year by any of the above mention players would be slim at best.

I think Martina has the best chances to win the 4 slams. She's a good claycourt player.

Venus or Serena could win all 4 slams. They are so talented, they could win on all 4 surfaces.

Davenport won't be playing for a long time anymore so she'll have to win RG this year or next year...

Capriati winning Wimbledon & US Open... Hmmm I don't see that happening soon. She could win all 4 slams though if she plays like she did last year.

Mary Pierce won't win the 4 slams. She's not a good grass player, altho she could win the US Open if she comes back to her old level (or better!).

There is another player with an arguable chance of winning the career slam bearing in mind that she only needs Wimbledon ...

IMHO Venus and Martina are the two most likely to manage it at the moment.

Davenport- winning the French is all in her (beautful) head. I hope she takes the title one year before she calls it quits.

Monica Seles
Lindsay Davenport
Kim Clijsters
Shino Tsurubuchi

I think Hingis will do it first, as she has a really good chance at RG.

But I also think that Capriati will do it eventually too. She's got a good game for hardcourts & grass and although seemingly underestimated by everyone but her fans on this board, she should do it.

Venus & Linds both have the problem that clay doesn't suit them. That said, both could do it if they really wanted to. Basically with both players it will come down to whether or not they really care enough about the clay season and RG to put the work in.

Serena has been so variable, that I'm reluctant to predict either way on. She certainly could win all 4 slams.

Monica Seles, I really can't see winning Wimbledon. She might pick up another slam, but it'd be RG or possibly the Oz.

Monica has the best shot. With a very favorable draw she can win Wimby (she's been to the SF, QF, and Finals already before), so she's does know how to play on grass.

Martina has a shot...but I fear her greatest chance was 97 in Paris...

Williams sisters can win anything, anywhere, so I certainly wouldn't be surprised if either did it, but I doubt that BOTH will do it.

I think Lindsay lacks patience and confidence to win in Paris...but she too can win anything, anywhere, so I wouldn't be totally surprised if she did it

[quote]i actually think clay does suit venus' game. she's a very good defensive player, can rally well and she has shown she can play on clay

Thank You Average Kinda Guy! The Goddess is underrated on clay. Eventhough she's beaten a couple of French Open champions on clay, (Pierce,ASV) that doesn't seem to matter to folks. Italian Open 1999, she beat Hingis, then went on to put away Pierce in the final, was in the '98 final too I believe,(losing to M.Hingis). Beat Pierce back 2 back on clay that year. I think Venus, is VENUS no matter what the surface.

Although I like Jenn, Monica or Lindsay to have a career GS, I do think VENUS will do it first.

Yeah, why do people think Venus is bad on clay?

She's the best in the world, on ALL surfaces, I expect her to do really well this year at Rg and she could win the Grand Slam (all 4 slams).

I'd put money on Hingis winning Roland Garros SOME DAY, provided she doesn't retire early.

I expect to see Venus do it if she wants it, as well.
