Cool ANNA K 's smack domwn of Jenny a prelude to 2002?

The recent defeat of Capriati by ANNA KOURNIKOVA may be the prelude of that title that ANNA and her fans have been waiting for her to achieve.

Defeating the #2, even in exhibition, is a very good sign for ANNA and it may also show that we should not expect the same from Cappy in 2002 that we did this year.

I couldn't agree more, but the last lost Capriati had was to Anna last year and after that she was on fire. Maybe she was hoping to capture the lightning in a bottle for the second time.

Nice to hear from you again, TeeRexx! I don't think Anna playing well in an exhibition has any carry over to the tremendous pressure she faces on the WTA tour. Just like I don't think Seles crushing Kournikova 6-2 6-2 in the Denver exhibition will have any carry over to the WTA tour. Anna is under so much pressure to win that first WTA title, that she has to feel the pressure. She is only human afterall. The good news is that Anna didn't get injured in any of these exhibition matches.

Exhibitions are pressureless, we will have to see how she fares in real tournaments with pressure first before making any decisions. Best of luck to her.

No.
As Williams_Rulez said: a tour event, especially a tierI or II or a GS gives pressure. Anna plays not constant enough to draw some of that play out of that exibit into a tour-match against a top-player.

Sorry, Anna-fans. But a QF or perhaps the SF at the AO/2002 is not impossible.

I'm sure Anna will be back in top 20 around time of Clay Season, and definately when clay season is over.

Although the win may help Anna's confidence a bit I really don't see any exhibition match as relevant to the upcoming year. I am sure JenCAP was tired after a grueling season and is saving her energy for matches that really count. I think Jen is going to take the Aussie Open '02 and kick everybody's booty!

Nah mate. Jen hadn't even started to train yet. It'd be like competing against a player ranked near 75 ... oh, no wait. She did

I think people are putting to much emphasis on the "Anna Exhibition World Tour". I went to the Jenn vs. Anna one and it WASN'T "Top Quality" tennis. They would of both played differently if this was a Tier I or II final!
Jenn and Anna both served poorly.
The line calls were really bad.
Jenn didn't seem into it at all.

We will just have to wait and see what happens down under for the next month to see what level she and all the other players are at!!

I don't doubt that Anna can and will repeat her victory over Jen at some point in the future.

I have a strange feeling though that just as her victory over Jen came when we least expected it, her first title victory will be again be an surprise one as she tends to crumble big time under the weight of expectation.

Anna has always done well against Jenn.

Granted they hadn't played since Jenn went through her transformation this year - but in the past she usually seems to find a way to beat (sometimes crush) Jenn.

I wouldnt read too much into it.

For either player.

This is nothing for Jen, and she will pay it no mind.

If it gives Anna continued confidence in getting back her match tightness and playing the game that she can.

I have a feeling Anna will win the tournament that she entered in Jan. It will not be a suprise because alot of tennis insiders have speculated that Anna entered the tournament(tier IV) to get the first title demons off of her back.

I agree that we should not put so much weight on the exhibition match as if the win had happened in a tour event, but a win against the #2 player in the world is still significant and a good sign for Anna. I also was at the match and although Jen looked a little sloppy, I thought that Anna actually played wel, keeping her UE's down and only double faulting once. The line calls were bad, but still a nice result that I am sure Anna feels good about.
Here's their head to head if anyone is interested in regular tour events:

Jennifer CAPRIATI (USA) v Anna KOURNIKOVA (RUS)

1999 Amelia Island Clay (O) 32 Anna KOURNIKOVA 3-6 3-6
2000 Sydney Hard (O) 16 Anna KOURNIKOVA 4-6 5-7
2000 Zurich Hard (I) QF Jennifer CAPRIATI 7-6(4) 6-4
2000 W.T.A. Tour Championships Carpet (I) 16 Anna KOURNIKOVA 4-6 4-6

Anna KOURNIKOVA (RUS) leads 3 : 1

Interesting that all matches were straight sets, as was Anna's win in the exhibition. I can't wait to see Anna's results in Auckland and I hope that she does really well! Even if she doesn't win the title, I think a semi-final or even final result would be great!!! GO ANNA!!!!!
