The appreciation of serve & volley while we still have any of it....

A reminiscing thread that i decided to create as i was sick of all the Aus Open related threads . However feel free to going back to discussing the shininess of Serena's ankles....

After Novotna and Tauziat retired, the dedicated 'every point' serve & volleyers officially died out in women's tennis. However, there are a few players out there that still do it regularly, plugging away against the grain and trying to show that its not quite dead yet. Post pictures of players you know that regularly serve and volley and entertain thousands with exciting and now unorthodox net game.

I'll go first: Amanda Janes GBR, a lefty that regularly serve & volleys, especially on grass.

sad that almost no one is serve volleying now. Most posters here dont know what they're missing.

They say that the courts, balls and rackets make it impossible. IM not so sure. If some one like federer serve and volleyed more hed nstill win probably and set off a whole new generations......

Generally the power in the mens game is a bit less then the mens and both are hitting harder these days. But when the men were hitting like the women are now, there were still a lot of successful serve volleyers. Some brave couch out there could start the ball rolling with a great junior......

We were given a pretty good shot of it in the mens this year with Suzuki, and Bjorkman playing Rusedski. I think the women's might be a lost cause. The big thing now is power. No one seems to care about anything else.

I would love to see a woman serve volley, I wish Amanda Janes had a decent enough ranking to be on Tv....

I think Seren'a ankles are great.

Does anyone know what she puts on them?

Women's tennis sucks.

Vaseline?

The serve & volleyer i provide for today is Roberta Vinci an Italian doubles specialist who has a touch and volley that has to be seen to believed. She serves and volleys on faster surfaces

Well.... watching the mixed doubles last night, I heard someone say that Trudi Musgrave is a serve volleyer. Can't find a pic of her serve volleying though. She's a lefty from Australia, and has been around a while. I think she's finished with singles now though.

Amelie is a great serve and volleyer when she actually does it.
Still, no one knows why she doesn't do that more often since she obviously knows what she's doing.

MARIA SHARAPOVA: "Amélie, you know it doesn't really matter at this point. I mean, I'd love to, I mean, Amélie is No. 1 in the world. She's playing great tennis. You know, I love that challenge of going out there and competing against the best in the world."
You'd love to what, Maria?

Amelie's an enigma. She plays so passively sometimes even tho she has such great offense. Justine has pretty volleys too and apparently she was trying more aggressive slice approach shots when she last played...but we won't see that on court any time soon

Silvia Farina-Elia has nice volleys too when she comes into net
...hmm I'm seeing a trend here

i've heard a commentator once said before that alicia molik used to play serve & volley in the juniors. she later adapted her game to the baseline coz its obviously the way to play the game now. from her matches that i've seen, she does serve & volley or at least approach the net from time to time.

i also missed the serve & volley game, actually i missed having to see more variety on most of the player's game. the slice & dice, crazy underspins on drop shots, or the high top spin ball, all that stuff.

speaking of amanda james, i've seen her match on tv last year at wimby and she is a true serve & volleyer.
