Post New Interview With Davenport On the Rankings!!

Here is a new interview with Davenport, I took it from the ESPN Board. Let me know what you guys think of it!

Date: 24/12/2001

The world's top-ranked player believes she is heading to Sydney next month unworthy of the position, writes Diane Pucin in Laguna Beach, California.

Lindsay Davenport is the No.1 female tennis player in the world, which makes her laugh.

"I don't feel No.1," says Davenport, who will play in the adidas International starting on January 6 in Sydney. "Venus [Williams] is the best. I think you have to say that the way she won Wimbledon and the US Open makes her No.1."

"I know the WTA wants people to believe all the tournaments matter but for the players and the fans, it's all about the grand slams," Davenport says.

"Would I trade my year of being No.1 for winning Wimbledon and the US Open, like Venus did? Oh yeah, of course I would."

Over the course of an hour, Davenport talks about Martina Hingis: "It's going to be hard for Martina to win slams anymore." And Jennifer Capriati: "I think I hurt her feelings when I say Venus should be No.1 but, come on. Venus played, like, 12 tournaments. Jennifer and I played 17, and we're still just barely ahead of her in the rankings."

Davenport is sitting in the living room of the Laguna Beach, California, home she shares with Jon Leach, an investment banker, brother of touring doubles specialist Rick and son of longtime USC tennis coach Dick.

It is the home of a regular person, which is something else good about Davenport. She is, of all the top female tennis players, the one you would want as a friend. She readily shares her thoughts, her emotions.

Now Davenport is getting restless. She had to pull out of her final match of 2001, the championship match of the WTA Tour Championships in Munich against Serena Williams.

Her left knee could not take one more moment of play. The knee is hyperextended and bone is rubbing on bone. She very much wanted to play Serena and was feeling a little guilty about her [Davenport's] No.1 ranking.

Davenport was playing Hingis when Hingis tore ligaments in her ankle in October. "The way she screamed, I've just never actually been on the court when somebody got hurt like that," she says. "Martina played so many tournaments trying to be No.1, and I think her body couldn't take it. "Actually, I kind of admire that about Venus and Serena. They don't feel any responsibility to play except when they want to and when they are totally healthy. If I'm entered in an event, I always feel like I have to play, even if I don't feel physically ready for it."

Davenport, 25, will be starting her 10th year as a touring pro. She wants to have a baby by the time she is 30. By her calculations, this gives her two, maybe three more years of professional tennis.

"If Venus played even close to a full schedule, I don't see right now how anybody else could be No.1," she says. "Over the last couple of years, her game has improved so much. Everything is better. It's pretty amazing. I've never seen anyone improve so much."

nice article

It's not shyness I have. It's just that I'm not one of those people who loves to open a newspaper of magazine and see myself all the time. I don't like that at all. I prefer to play my tennis which I love, and with which I've been blessed.

I agree, Bob, I agree.

This is my home, the country where my heart is;
Here are my hopes, my dreams, my holy shrine;
But other hearts in other lands are beating
With hopes and dreams as true and high as mine.
My country's skies are bluer than the ocean,
And sunlight beams on cloverleaf and pine;
But other lands have sunlight too, and clover,
And skies are everywhere as blue as mine.
O hear my song, thou God of all the nations,
A song of peace for their land and for mine.

Damn! Me thinks Lindsay is an under cover Venus fan Girl come on in and post in the Williams Tennis association. Nice interview Lindsay!! You said exactly how I and many other fans of Venus and family feel.

Lindsay really is telling it like it is concerning Venus and her not wanting to hurt her body. She's also dead on concerning the SLAMS. It is the most important in tennis. Take it from a pro player.

LMAO @ Dawn.

Big ups to Lindsay. Even though she doesn't think she deserves it she still finished 1st in the rankings. I think Venus is the best, but Lindsay is still #1. Venus will get there and when she does then she and all her fans can rightfully say she's #1. I'll take Venus's GS wins over that #1 ranking anyday. Just like Lindsay and I'm sure a whole bunch of other players would.

Lindsay, once again you have shown why you are my favorite player!! I am a little discouraged at how much better she thinks Venus is though. It is hard to beat someone if you think they are that much better. Come on Lindsay!! Let's have a great 2002!!!

Get well soon Lindsay!!!!

It is a little discouraging to hear her thoughts about her #1 rank. Infact I started a post way back talking about this very thing. The WTA ranking system is piss poor. Anytime you got a pro player feeling like she doesn't deserve the top spot something is wrongo! It does nothing for the morale in my opinion.

I am glad Lindsay is speaking the truth it will hopefully wake up the ranking people. Also am I the only one who thinks from this interview that maybe Lindsay is getting tired of the tour? She's talking about babies and such. I get the feeling that she has different priorities at the moment. Sure she is serius about tennis but it seems that she wants to settle down too.

Though I agree with Lindsay on the rankings, I wish the interview had given us a clue as to how her knee was. Will LD be at 100 going into OZ? We wanna know!

I'm glad I missed that match against Hingis - it soundslike she got hurt pretty bad .

Interesting interview, but I think Lindsay sells herself a bit short - Venus is blatently the best player in the world, but Lindsay isn't that far behind that she can't beat her. It concerns me that if she thinks she is then she'll always struggle mentally against Venus.

Dawn, I remember that thread you started and you were on point. Lindsay's interview validates what you said all along.

What Lindsay said above is exactly what she said in the last interview, only this time, with a lot more clarity. Lindsay does feel like and says Venus is "#1". She doesn't care about the rankings so much as the slams, and the ranking system needs some type of change.

I just hope Venus can validate it, and become number 1, on paper, next year!
