This shows how crazy the Chinese tennis federation is...

Mary Carillo said last night during the Venus/Peng match that NONE of the Chinese players will be attending Wimbledon this year.

Why? Because their federation and government is making them train for and compete in the Asian games A competition where absolutely NOBODY inside the top 200 will show up, guaranteed. No Asian player is going to skip Wimbledon (that can get into it at least) and the tournaments leading up to it to train for what basically amounts to an exhibition.

As Mary Carillo put it, "They (the government) will tell you what's important."

The Asian Games isn't an exhibition event. I don't know about tennis, though
but it's pretty serious. Just as much as the CommonWealth Games.

The next one is in 2006.

No it's 2006 in Doha.

There's also something smaller that's still very
important on this side of the world called the SouthEast Asian
Games and that's held a year later in 2007 in Thailand.

It's really a big deal here because these events are suppose
to help train for the big, big event....the Olympics held in China.

Asian games is like the Olympic games of asia and its very important for China. And I would'nt blame them to have their players in the asian games instead of wimbledon, wimbledon is every year while asian games is every 4 years too.

The commentators from my coverage were talking about how the government provides these players with everything, but keeps all their prize money. Something like what happened with players from the Soviet bloc around 15 years ago (read: Natasha Zvereva). The commentator discussing this had spoken to Chinese players and their coaches at an ITF event earlier. He said they are provided with apartments, etc by the government, but have to give all their prize money.

FUCK YOU, SEWTA.

This isn't a 'personal freedom' issue. Just as, in the States, you have to abide by the rules of the national federation to recieve their support, so too in China. Remember the US Tennis Federation refused to support Meghann Shaughnessy when she wouldn't fire her coach. The Chinese Tennis federation supports players from when their very young in return for that level of control. You can do without that support if you want to avoid that level of control. Shaui Peng's coach stayed in the USA for ten years.

Next we'll be hearing, 'isn't it a shame that the Chinese government takes so much of the player's money'. As if we don't pay taxes in the USA.

Proud to be an American
Not blind. Not uninformed. We are party to atrocities. But the response of the world after 9/11 is worth noting. Even our most dire enemies offered aid. We should all be so lucky.
