WTA Tour to Develop Separate US, European and Asian circuits by 2007

By Art Oodeetoo

In response to players’ complaints about jet lag and the grueling tennis schedule, the WTA Tour is developing separate US, European and Asian circuits. Set to debut in 2007, the new schedule will give players the opportunity to play closer to home throughout the season. The Fed Cup format will be revamped yet again, and the off-season will be expanded.

“I am so so so glad, I won’t have to spend so much time in Europe anymore,” said three-time major winner, Jennifer Capriati, who plans to still be playing in 2007. “Maybe now, my f-ing indoor record will improve,” said Capriati.

French Open champion Anastasia Myskina said, “This is fantastic news. I hate all the lousy time zone changes. But I really hope Maria doesn’t play in Europe. If she does, I’ll play somewhere else.”

Six-time Grand Slam Champion Serena Williams said, “This is perfect. Now I’ll have more time to audition for movie roles.”

While the European and Asian circuits are still in the planning stages, the American tournament schedule has already been decided. Here is a look at the 2007 calendar.

In response to the schedule, Sports Illustrated tennis guru, Jon Wertheim exclaimed, “Oh yeah, putting a million tournaments in California and Florida is a brilliant move. How do they plan on selling all of those tickets to such a limited market? And putting the tour championships in the Rose Bowl? There’s 100,000 seats in that place! Are they planning on paying people to fill the seats to avoid embarrassment?”

While the California and Florida centric schedule has left many critics scratching their heads, WTA Tour CEO Larry Scott is mystified by the criticism. “The players said they wanted to play closer to home, so that’s what we’re doing. Who gives a shit about expanding the tour’s appeal to a broader audience?”

Scott is currently developing the European tour and plans to start on the Asian circuit in the near future. Rumor has it, there are five Belgian and six Russian tournaments on the European schedule.

“Now none of the players will be allowed to complain about jet lag,” said Scott

"I resolve to get arrested for indecent exposure," Mary Lynn Rajskub (Chloe on 24).

You had me there for a moment. No, not because of the
that was real. The new SONY/ERICKSON deal sort of gave this away
article away as a joke piece.
