Bid to get Hingis to promote Phuket

Bid to get Hingis to promote Phuket

Published on January 06, 2005

[TENNIS] The Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand (LTAT) plans to ask former world No 1 Martina Hingis to help local tourism after the tsunami disaster.

LTAT vice-president Chaipak Siriwat said Suwat Liptapunlop, the LTAT president, would try to persuade the Swiss star to visit Phuket, one of the six provinces devastated by the tidal waves, to promote local tourism.

Suwat believes that Hingis, who will make a comeback to the WTA tour in Pattaya at the end of this month, has many fans all over the world and her presence on a Phuket beach could convince foreigners that things are back to normal and it is safe to have a holiday in Thailand.

Local tourism has been severely affected by the disaster. A host of European tour groups have cancelled their trips to Thailand in January. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) claims the country could lose up to Bt100 billion in income from the hospitality industry because of the catastrophe.

Deputy Prime Minister Suwat is also in charge of Sports and Tourism and is considering asking the TAT and the private sector to contribute to an appearance fee for Hingis if she helps local tourism.

The five-time Grand Slam winner suffered a chronic left ankle injury which has kept her on the sidelines since 2002. She is scheduled to take part in the US$170,000 Volvo Women’s Open in Pattaya from January 31 to February 6.

The 24-year-old star also aims to donate all her prize money from this tournament to a local charity for children. Three tennis stars have been promoters of the country’s tourism. Russian glamour girl Anna Kournikova featured in a promotional video for Pattaya in 2003, while her compatriot and Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams were here last week to promote Chiang Mai.
