Dressed For Success, Golovin Seeks To Crack Top 10

Her distinctive LaCoste dresses can sometimes be cut so short there barely seems to be enough fabric to serve as dental floss for the crocodile that serves as the Lacoste logo, but 16-year-old Tatiana Golovin wore out her opponent in delivering another dress down at the Uncle Tobys Hardcourts on
Australia's Gold Coast today.

The 27th-ranked Moscow-born, Parisian pounded Chinese qualifier Zi Yan, 6-1, 6-4, in a 52-minute mismatch. Eager to escape the heat that hovered around 86 degrees Fahrenheit, Golovin maintained command of the match with a decisive serve and authoritative ground strokes.

"You don't want to spend a lot of time in this heat," Golovin said. "It was obviously very hard being my first match in the tournament but it was good to get out there and find some rhythm."

In the next round of the $170,000 Tier III tournament, Golovin will face defending champion Ai Sugiyama.

Residing in the upper reaches of ranking oblivion in January of 2004, Golovin skyrocketed up the rankings, rising 328 spots in 11 months to her current spot in the top 30. Excited by the prospect of playing majors as a seeded player, Golovin is eager to crack the top 10.

"It's very positive and I'm especially happy that now I'll be seeded at tournaments such as the Grand Slams so I can play against the best players," said Golovin, whose rankings rise was the third biggest leap on the WTA Tour in 2004. "When you're ranked outside the top 100 it's really hard to play the challengers and the qualifiers, so I'm really happy that I got through that area really fast."

Clad in an orange dress, Golovin said she's contributing design suggestions to LaCoste for her tennis clothes. Golovin's fashion sense is based on fun and form.

"I like to make it fun," Golovin said. "We re-signed so they (LaCoste) will be making all my outfits and I'll have some input so I'm really excited about that."

In other opening-round results at the Uncle Tobys Hardcourts:
  • Qualifier Camille Pin (FRA) def. Anca Barna (GER) 6-2, 6-4
  • Qualifier Sesil Karatantcheva (BUL) def. Maria Elena Camerin (ITA) 6-2, 6-4
  • Samantha Stosur (AUS) def. (4) Karolina Sprem (CRO) 6-4, 6-2
  • Klara Koukalova (CZE) def. (WC) Jaslyn Hewitt (AUS) 6-4, 1-6, 6-2
  • (2) Patty Schnyder (SUI) def. Virginie Razzano (FRA) 6-2, 6-4
  • (7) Elena Likhovtseva (RUS) def. Emilie Loit (FRA) 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-2

I think Golovin is much hotter than Sharapova. Anyone else agree?

Golovin will probably hover around the top 10 for a long time, maybe reaching 8 or 9. She just doesn't have the game to get really high up, unless she takes advantage of open spots once a bunch of veterans retire.

I couldn't agree more. I personally find Sharapova to be unattractive, but I am a diehard Anna K fan so...

I agree, Anna would be first on my list, with Tati second. No one beats Anna in the looks department.

I like Tati - she has a great future that's for sure!

RIP Elena Baltacha, thank you for dedicating your life to a sport we all love. You'll be missed but never forgotten.

I think I've seen her play once but I wasn't impressed. Can anyone describe her gamestyle/weapons? Apparently Krajicek and Ivanovic beat her quite easily so if Golovin can reach top 10 ..

When did she play against them? I remember only her loss to Vaidisova and it wasn't easy.

against these two players, tati was not at her top forme, lost for both in 3 sets against ivanicevic she lost her patience and the serbian played very well.

I think that today if she meet them again she wouldnt lost, she has more experience now.

I hope the headline 'Golovin seeks to crack top ten' wasn't a reference to young Tati's shorts being rather low slung

Oh hell, I got beaten to making a crack about the crack, by Mrs Peel, but She won't know because She isn't reading My posts anymore after I made a crack about sacred Serena!
