Kuznetsova the pick for wild card

Kuznetsova the pick for wild card

By John Thirsk

January 2, 2005

US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova has been targeted by Medibank International tournament director Craig Watson to fill one of the two final wildcard spots for the tournament starting at Sydney Olympic Park, Homebush, next Sunday.

"We have already given Australia's most improved youngster Samantha Stosur [ranked 65] the first of the three wild cards," Watson said.

"We are looking at Svetlana to take the next invitation and are talking to her connections. To have Svetlana on board would give the tournament three of the four 2004 grand slam champions.

"Justine Henin-Hardenne [Australian Open] and Anastasia Myskina [French Open] are already in and Svetlana would just add another dimension to this outstanding field, which has a cut-off ranking of 21 in the 32 main draw."

Kuznetsova, 19, rocketed up the world rankings from No36 to No5 last year, winning three of seven finals.

Blessed with an explosive forehand, Kuznetsova also won the pre-Wimbledon event at Eastbourne and another in Bali.

At the US Open, Kuznetsova blasted past world No1 Lindsay Davenport in a semi-final before taking care of countrywoman Elena Dementieva in the final.

The Russian Revolution will hit Sydney next week with five of their top six women, all ranked in the top 12, in Sydney.

The assault includes Myskina (No3), Kuznetsova (No5), Dementieva (No6), Vera Zonerava (No11) and Nadia Petrova (No12).

Tournament officials are confident Davenport will be fit for Sydney despite withdrawing from this week's Hopman Cup with a recurrence of a right knee problem.

Coogee youngster Todd Reid has been given one of the three men's wild cards for the second successive year after reaching the quarter-finals last year.

Mark Philippoussis has also been granted a wild card, with Wayne Arthurs and Scott Draper still in contention for the final invitation.
