Talking Myskina, Safin win Russia's top player awards

MOSCOW, Dec 4 (Reuters) - French Open champion Anastasia Myskina has been voted Russia's female player of the year by the panel of tennis journalists, coaches and officials.

Australian Open runner-up Marat Safin won the men's award.

The Russian Tennis Federation announced the winners at its annual gala ceremony on Saturday.

Myskina became the first Russian woman to win a grand slam title when she beat compatriot Elena Dementieva in the French Open final in June.

The 23-year-old Muscovite also capped a phenomenal year for Russian tennis by leading her country to their first Fed Cup title last week in Moscow.

Myskina won both of her singles matches in the final against holders France before teaming up with Vera Zvonareva to clinch the tie 3-2 in a dramatic victory in the decisive doubles.

Russian women have swept the last three grand slam titles in 2004, with 17-year-old Maria Sharapova lifting the Wimbledon crown and Svetlana Kuznetsova winning the U.S. Open.

Safin reached the Australian Open final in January, losing to Roger Federer, before suffering a mid-season slump. However the 2000 U.S. Open champion won back-to-back Masters Series events in Paris and Madrid to finish the year at number four in the world. Russia's Fed Cup team scooped the team of the year award.

I can't think of a witty signature right now. I like turtles.

It's funny. Maria is the female player of the year, but not the Russian female player of the year.

why are you rolling your eyes at this? if she does become #1 she would deserve to win her homeland's poll again.

I have a feeling that next year Maria will join the Russian Fed Cup team and plays along with Myskina. They will probably reconcile and go on to win another title. The team will consist of Myskina, Sharapova, Kuznetsova, and Zvonareva. This combination would give Tarpishev an excuse to exclude Dementieva, since M, S, and K are all slam winners. Zvonareva will be included as a doubles partner of Myskina. Their success at this year's final justifies that. Likhovtseva will not be needed anymore.

With so many Lena and Masha fans, Nastya might have to stick for many weeks to a possible #1 spot to win a player of the year poll. Sad but true

Congrats to Myskina and Safin. And TC is full of information today. Thanks.

What's so funny GL? You didn't think Sharapova would win? If Maria won Russian female tennis player of the year award Myskina would have had a fit!
