Couldn't Hingis stick to doubles for Charity?

Although like many others I'm finding it hard to believe that Hingis has in mind a comeback to singles, I really don't see why she'd enter a singles event simply to raise money for charity.

There's many ways she could raise money, and if she had to play tennis, surely she'd do it on a beach, or with kids, or with Pamela Shriver as some big joke.

Why enter a competitive tour event? It just doesn't add up.

My guess is she's indeed doing this for charity, but in the back of her mind she's testing just what she's capable of and longs to return to the tour.

I think you are right that maybe behind this there is a curiosity about testing whether or not she could envisage a return to the tour. When she left, she made it clear that it was an indefinite leave of absence rather than a retirement.

She'll earn more money for charity playing singles than just doubles and if she's going to play singles exhibitions then a few real matches will help her get back into shape. I'd love to see her back on the tour full time and, as with her namesake, Monica, Steffi, Gaby, even Miss Pornikova, I'll be happy to see her grace the courts with her skills once more. Viva Tennis!

In Wertheim's weekly mailbag he said Hingis plays Sabatini in an exhibition in Feb. I haven't found any info on it. Does anyone know anything about it? Where it's being played, if anyone else is playing with them?

Martina and Gaby are playing in Antwerp, apparently in a exhibit connected to the Diamond Games tournament.

As to the money being earned, I think the prize money is only a part of what she is raising for the charities connected to the Thailand tournament. She apparently plans to tour all the facilities and perform her normal functions for the World Health Organization, which she represents as a goodwill ambassador.

As to why play a whole tournament, she could be trying to test her feet to see how they stand up if she has to play several matches, or even a whole week of matches.

So far, she still says it would take a medical miracle for a full comeback, so how her feet respond after training and playing several matches could be the deciding factor.
