Has Maria disappointed in 2004?

I think yes.

I definitely expected more of her after her great match against Serena mid-season, but she really underachieved in the 2nd half of 2004.

Let's hope she can improve next year.

I couldn't disagree more. Since she is only 17 and has won 2 majors in one year against fierce competition from older compatriots like Mauresmo and Davenport.

No, if you take the point from the start of the year. No one would have imagined she would win 2 major tournements. After the grass season, i still dont think she dissapointed. Great year from Masha!

My Favourite Players

1. Maria Sharapova
2. Daniela Hantuchova
3. Maria Kirilenko

Удачи тебе, Мария Шарапова!

I would have thought that at this time last year Maria was far too underexperienced and not mature enough to win Wimbledon or the YEC. She has exceeded everyones expectations I think.

i think the title is misleading. maria did have some disappointing losses after wimbledon. but overall, her 2004 was spectacular. who would have expected her to rise up the rankings so rapidly at the beginning of the year??!!

Yes. World No 4. and 2 Majors, and still 17.

After her Wimbledon win, I suggested she might make the Top 5 by the end of the year. When she had a few losses in the summer people pooh-poohed that. And here she is - No 4! The girl done good.

Sabine Lisicki, Maria Sharapova, Elena Dementieva,

Victoria Azarenka, Dinara Safina, Maria Kirilenko

Nadia Petrova, Samantha Stosur, Ana Ivanovic.

Considering the trolls (Volcana, Bandabou, Rocketta, etc.) were deeming her a one slam wonder who would finish outside the top ten and would never reach the top ten again, there is no argument that she has underperformed. I think she might win the slam next year--not a slam, the slam.

haha, NO. i think shes maybe the only player in the top 10 who could be thrilled with her year. when you think of sharapova's year, you think, wimbledon, yec. the only other top players who should be happy with their accomplishments are myskina and sveta. they broke through in slams and will be remembered for that. it's great lindsay ended #1, but with no slams to show for it, it's not as sweet, same for momo who was at #1 for 5 weeks. elena choked away her finals, serena didn't have a banner year by her standards, venus fell apart at times but had a good clay season, vera qualified for yec (happy with that alone?) and justine would be upset she couldnt do more.

masha exceeded everyone's expectations... she could have played a few matches better, but that's so nitpicky that it's ridiculous.

hell no, the girl is only 17, she won wimbledon and the YEC what more could you ask for. i did even expect maria to make the top 10 let alone the top 5 and win wimby and the YEC, under achieved? any player would love a year like that and she is still only 17. i dont get how you can say she disappointed you but everyone is allowed their own opinion.

Go the aussies! stosur!!!
and good luck russians: dementieva, safina, kirilenko, sharapova, kuznetsova, bovina, zvonareva, dushevina.

also good luck to: azarenka, lucic, sprem, vakulenko, vaidisova, safarova, ivanovic, groenefeld, mirza, krajicek, kvitkova, larcher de brito, lisicki.

Of course not!!!

After her Wimbledon win, she simply suffered a "let down" where she got a bit distracted by all the media attention and also I think was trying too hard to be sucessful.

But she got rid of all that, and got back to playing some great tennis. Seoul and Tokyo were perfect venues for her to build confidence in her game to then attack the indoo season.

Here's looking forward to 2005!!!

Yeah, only one!

Come on, she's 17. Not a lot of 17 year olds have two majors and get to #4 in the world... some have, but not many. She's done great.

I guess if Maria had only won the three lower Tier events this year, she would have been regarded as having a successful season.

But the fact she won Wimbledon and YEC, people are making more out of what she didn't do than they should have.

Maria won a lot of matches this year.

But if you look at her record, prior to Birmingham, she had only made it to the quarters or better in two tournaments, one quarter over the summer after Wimbledon and of course, had her best results in the fall, winning three titles, making it to the final at Zurich and two other semi-final showings.

None-the-less, going 55-15 in 2004 is nothing to sneeze at. Did you see any other player her age with that kind of record on the WTA tour?

By all means Maria had a fantastic year.

Hmm... I can see that he might have been, now.

But seriously, they both had great matches against Serena mid-season. And Maria Sharapova's the one everyone's talking about so its natural that everyone thought that.
