Williams Sisters McDonalds Exhibition Detroit: Venus def Serena 6-4, 7-5

"AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) -- Venus Williams defeated injured sister Serena 6-4, 7-5 in an exhibition match Thursday night.

Serena was obviously limited by the abdominal-muscle injury sustained earlier in the week in the WTA Championship final with Wimbledon champ Maria Sharapova. Her serve was noticeably weakened, and she grimaced after several shots, but still was competitive.

"It's strange, because when the serves are that slow, it throws off your pace and makes it difficult," Venus said. "She was throwing all kind of tricky serves at me because she couldn't hit it hard."

Venus also struggled with her serve early -- double faulting twice while losing the match's first game -- but rallied to win the first set.

Serena, who was born in Saginaw, almost forced a tiebreaker in the second set, but finally double faulted on match point to give her sister the win. It was the first time she had played as a professional in Michigan.

"It was a great crowd. I love Detroit and I wish there was a tournament here every year," she said. "I'll feel better the next time I'm here."

The sisters also played a warmup match, with Venus and football Hall of Famer Barry Sanders beating Serena and local news anchor Stephen Clark 7-3."

I think Serena needs to slow down and rest up.

awww, I'm proud of Serena....this tour could've really been messed up if she wasn't willing to play through the pain. I love that they chose cities where there is no tournaments because I know of people who always wanted to see them play but had absolutely no chance until recently.

is serena okay? hasn't she already played 2 (exhibiton) matches since her injury??? it's honorable that she's keeping her commitment, but i don't think she should be out on court grimacing in pain despite what people who have tickets want to see. hopefully she's taking it easy and getting better. who knows, maybe not resting it can help it heal and keep flexibility. whatever's the case, all for the best, i hope.

good job venus... assert your mental superiority again

I was there last night, and even though Serena was obviously hampered, she put up one hell of a fight. There was a game in the second set, when Venus was serving to either go up 5-4 or 6-5 (sorry, I can't remember which) and it was deuce, ad too many times to count. Serena would get it to deuce playing a spectacular return, and then when it was her ad the ball always inevitably went into the net at the return (Though that was mostly Venus's fault. Some of her serves were amazing). Serena looked pissed that she wasn't able to take advantage, and I thought it was cool she was taking it seriously, despite it only being an exhibition.

Venus was playing really well, but last night she was way too overeager at net. She had multiple floaters and she'd crush them 10 feet out. Both of their backhands were great. Their forehands were performing alright last night, but not as well as I would have wished.

Anyway, Venus seemed to be having a good time and played a bit to the crowd. It was endearing. She settled herself more firmly as my second favorite player, but I was also really impressed with Serena, who kept playing hard, even though it looked like she wincing near the end.

Obviously, if Serena is able to play exhibitions just a few days after the YEC, then the injury wasn't/isn't that serious, which is good news for Serena fans because they know that Serena wasn't that badly hurt and good news for Masha fans as they can heave a sigh of relief that Serena has no grounds to dismiss her defeat in the final last week.

Credit to Serena for not retiring in that match vs Masha and honouring her exhibition commitments.

I was also there last night and at Wayne State University when they spoke earlier in the day. I must say that I was not much of a Williams sister fan but in the past year I have grown into one. Venus was especially gracious both at Wayne State and later in the night at the Palace. She was very friendly. On the other hand Serena did not seem to be all there. You could tell that the injury was bothering her from her body attitude. At the match I was impressed with the way that Venus was hitting her forehand. She rarley missed any and if she did they were long and not into the net. She hit many winners off the forehand side which proved to be the weaker side in previous matches. It looked to me that she has been working on that. Apart from the tennis, I was surprised at how many people came to the match. The lower part of the Palace was almost full and I know form other tennis matches there (Kournikova and Coetzer a few years back) the crowd was minimal. It was a great experience to witness professional tennis in a city where the chances to do so are extremly rare and I thank Venus and Serena for choosing Detroit as one of their stops.

I haven't seen one interview where Serena has said dismissed Maria's win. Her speech immediately after the match on court was proof of that. But thanks for the heart felt worry over Serena, her injury and her fans. We're all warm inside.
