What is the "Bonus Pool"?

I was reading notes and netcords today, and they had year end money totals, and there was a column for "bonus pool" money,
venus won $647,000 and she only earned $827,128 from playing, that is an awesome bonus for her
jennifer, lindsay, serena, nastya, dementieva, amelie, justine, kim, hantuchova all earned in the 6 figures
maria only got $37,000+ and zuluaga got $429 dollars, it was just really mystifying, if someone could explain, it would be appreciated

It will always be Arantxa, hall of famer! and martina hingis and kim clijsters - amazing legends
ana ivanovic and the italian girls, especially pennetta (forza azzurre! RG CHAMP FRANCESCA AND FINALIST SARA!)
aga, vika, sam, na in the next tier

Venus got 600,000$ and all the other leading players only got like 100,000? That seems strange. I don't understand why the gap would be that large.

Gold Exempt players split up the "Bonus Pool" money but i dont know how its alloted to specific players, except that the higher-rated players on the GE list obviously get more. I imagine Justine's 125,000$ fine for skipping YEC was deducted from her GE bonus.

the Bonus Pool is what the WTA uses instead of appearance guarantees as an incentive for top-name players to enter tournies. Of course the WTA players and tournies can get around the appearance money rule as well though, when they want to. The ATP has a more transparent system where the name players simply get paid guarantees for showing up at a tournie.

thanks vogus, does anyone else have any idea why venus' payment, as well as jennifer and serena and lindsay's would be so much larger? is it the american factor? also, are these predetermined payments? otherwise why is sharapova's so low?

Sharapova's '04 payout is low bcuz the GE list order is determined at the start of the year for the whole year - so Masha was low on the list this year, but next year her payout is going to be huge.
