Williams Sisters McDonalds Exhibition Chicago: Venus def Serena 6-3, 6-4

Pretty good match, Venus played great, Serena didn't half the time, but when she picked it up there was some exciting tennis. Serena still couldn't really serve so she used a different service motion so she didn't arm her serve like in the third set in the final of the YEC. Unfortunately it didn't work as Venus had her way with Serena's serve throughout most of the match. Venus was blasting FH return winners. Serena made a ton of errors until she was down 6-3, 5-0 and she started to blast return winners off of Venus' huge serves. The crowd tried to cheer Serena back into the match and it almost worked as Serena got to 5-4 second set, but then Venus gathered herself and threw down 4 big serves to close it out. They were alot more serious then I thought they would be. Venus showed no mercy to Serena's serves. Serena nearly threw her racquet a few times. There was one point where Venus hits a drop shot at the net and Serena starts to go for it and steps out of her shoe and drops her racquet. The sisters started laughing really hard after that. Prior to the sisters coming out there was a one set match featuring Donald Young playing against another junior player. The guy was older, bigger and stronger, but Young still whooped him 6-1 and the one game was given away by Young. Donald has a great FH. Bebe Winans also sang the national anthem. It was great to see the variety of people that packed the house just to see the sisters, it made me even more proud of them. I wish it had gone to 3 sets, but for some reason Venus wasn't having it. Maybe she was trying to get Serena off the court.

P.S. I don't know if their grunts are just magnified by microphones on court, but they didn't seem at all loud in this match. Venus was grunting from the beginning and she never really got that loud. Maybe the intensity of a tour match just wasn't there. Though it seemed like they were intense.

Let this be a good sign for Venus in turning her play around in 2005. Good luck to both ladies. Thanks for the report.

That's not reasonable from Serena not to have some rest now. But she honours her commitments I guess.

The good news is that her doctors did not forbid her to play this, so her injury is not a very bad one like we feared after the YEC final.

man i'm glad Serena even showed up. it's fair to say she won't be out for 6 months with a stomach injury like Venus was, that's good news.

sounds like you had fun knizzle. that incident with the shoe sounds hilarious
