Power Game = More Injuries

I think everyone knew the power game would bring more injuries into the sport and put alot more pressure on the athletes bodies.

Lyndsey, Amelia and the Williams sisters where the first to bring the power game at a high level (lots of power but still much more to their game, consistant power and mixing up shots etc), so why are we know suprised they're not playing full seasons?

And mostly why are the commentators so suprised and unsure why they are always injured?

I am struck by how Serena who started her early matches serving slowly -
presumably because she had the problem at the start - was hitting some serves at 127 and 122 mph. If she was injured before you have to wonder what damage that did. If the ball was meant to be hit that hard she wouldn't be one of 2 people doing it (and the other one is an injury case as well)

Oh yah right. None of the power players can play with angles and drop shots/drop volleys on the court. All they do is blast the ball around.

Look at Serena, Venus, Captriati and Davenport. Oh what about the Russian army. No finesse huh? Amelie and Justine?

Everyone is using a combination of power and finesse. It's not just power.

With regards to injury, i guess its a unfortunate 'side effect' that can be reduced with proper conditioning.

Serena's injury is a perfect example of how her technique is failing her...by "muscling" the ball she aggraviated her abdominal muscles while trying to generate "power" while this worked for awhile, eventually the pain came back I think all power hitters have got to change their game somewhat, constant slam, bang, hard hitting tennis is just too tough on the body. Myskina at the moment seems to be able to combat the power with her finesse game and variation so could be the answer but everybody is not capable of doing it... even Maria I can see will be subject to many injuries with her style of tennis bashing...watch Federer girls, he's a "master" of the all court skills!!

I can think of afew players since I started following tennis that had a career ending injury, but I can name more then afew that can't play more then afew tournaments this year and last.

I never said there where no injuries in tennis and powerplay has brought them in, I said MORE injuries now. So your reply makes no sense to my topic.

Iroda, Nadia, Venus, Serena, Amelie, Jennifer, lindsay (and add Myskina, Sharapova and schiavone who all have been complaining of injured shoulders this year)

Now is that a list of people with shoulder, back or knee injuries or a list of players with fast serves?

Then ask what wore Justine down, might explain kim's wrist and what Martina's ankles and feet were doing when they were damaged.

It may seem like she's not coz she hit with topspin, but that requires a lot more power than a flat shot, and that's why she's so muscled
