Way to go Maria! Serena fought incredibly well despite the injury (leading 4-0), but Maria played very wisely and calmly and took the match. The way Maria made her way to the final was amazing, and the fact that Serena couldn't play her best doesn't take any glory off the achievement.
Congrats Maria for victory and #4 ranking! Looking forward to seeing ya next year.

A lot of the players and commentators underestimated you again, but you fought hard and came out with another amazing victory.
Maria came through all the tests and triumphed, beating the US Open Champ. The French Open Champ (and her Bogey Player, Myskina), and then coming back from a narrowly lost 1st set against a resurgent Serena to take the 2nd, and fight through Serena's distracting injury come-back to take the match and the YEC title.
I felt sorry for Serena, getting her injury when she did, but that doesn't detract from the 17 year-old's amazing mental strength, skill and achievement in beating the YEC field. (And all this from someone who many people here were saying couldn't beat a Top Thirty player! )
Congrats to Maria Sharapova on winning the YEC and on having a great year! And congrats to Serena Williams on playing injured in the YEC final when she could have pulled out midway through the match. Serena showed alot of heart playing the final with a pulled abdominal muscle.
Happiness is like a cat. If you try to coax it or call it, it will avoid you. It will never come. But if you pay no attention to it and go about your business, you'll find it rubbing up against your legs and jumping into your lap. - William Bennett
What an unbelievable year for young Maria! Number 4 in the world and beating all her Russian nemeses along the way. I hope Maria, Serena and all the girls can rest up and come back bettr than ever for the 2005 season!
