Amelie Mauresmo withdrew from France's Fed Cup team Tuesday, saying she needs time off before preparing for next year's Australian Open.
Defending Fed Cup champion France faces Spain in the semifinals later this month.
"I will not take part in the Fed Cup," Mauresmo said on her Web site. "This decision was extremely hard to take. But my objective is to win a Grand Slam, so I had to do it."
Mauresmo, ranked No. 2, lost in the WTA Championships semifinals to Serena Williams on Sunday. Mauresmo would have finished the year No. 1 had she won the tournament.
Mauresmo, 25, has never won a Grand Slam title.
"If you want to keep improving like all the great players then there are difficult choices to take," she said. "For me the time has come."
Mauresmo said she would rest for two weeks before beginning a five-week training program leading up to the Australian Open.
The Fed Cup semifinals are Nov. 24-25 in Moscow, with the finals Nov. 27-28.
I'm sorry but that is selfish... plus, I think fed cup play would be good preparation for the aussie. Also, Lindsay's winning the Aussie Open. Lindsay!
