Post Top Tennis Nations

I had some time and decided to make a list of the top tennis nations across both mens and womens tennis. What I would've ideally liked to do in hindsight was to sort all the ranked players into countries, average the rankings of their players, add the averages together and then sort ascendingly. But what I've done instead is take the rankings of the No. 1 male and female players from each country and then sorted them ascendingly. I haven't counted retired players such as Huber and Ferreira, both of whom would've boosted their nations higher.

It was interesting to note that only 67 nations have at least one representative in the mens and womens rankings.

Here are the results (player rankings in paranthesis):

01 UNITED STATES Agassi (3) + Davenport (1) = 4
02 FRANCE Grosjean (6) + Mauresmo (9) = 15
03 SWITZERLAND Federer (13) + Hingis (4) = 17
04 RUSSIA Kafelnikov (4) + Dementieva (15) = 19
05 SPAIN Ferrero (5) + Sanchez Vicario (17) = 22
06 BELGIUM Malisse (33) + Clijsters (5) = 38
07 ARGENTINA Canas (15) + Suarez (27) = 42
08 AUSTRALIA Hewitt (1) + Molik (47) = 48
09 GERMANY Haas (8) + Weingartner (42) = 50
10 CROATIA Ivanisevic (12) + Majoli (44) = 56
11 CZECH REPUBLIC Novak (29) + Bedanova (28) = 57
12 SLOVAK REPUBLIC Hrbaty (36) + Nagyova (25) = 61
13 ITALY Gaudenzi (54) + Farina Elia (14) = 68
14 AUSTRIA Koubek (63) + Schett (21) = 84
15 NETHERLANDS Schalken (26) + Oremans (84) = 110
16 BELARUS Mirnyi (35) + Poutchek (76) = 111
17 SWEDEN Johansson (18) + Carlsson (102) = 120
18 PARAGUAY Delgado (92) + De Los Rios (55) = 147
18 SOUTH AFRICA Godwin (128) + Coetzer (19) = 147
20 THAILAND Srichaphan (120) + Tanasugarn (29) = 149

That was the Top 20 in detail. The rest of the nations in order are:

21 HUNGARY
22 ISRAEL
23 GREAT BRITAIN
24 UZBEKISTAN
25 MOROCCO
26 DENMARK
27 YUGOSLAVIA
28 ZIMBABWE
29 BRAZIL
30 KOREA

31 GREECE
32 ROMANIA
33 JAPAN
34 UKRAINE
35 CANADA
36 SLOVENIA
37 BULGARIA
38 INDONESIA
39 LUXEMBOURG
40 NEW ZEALAND

41 MEXICO
42 INDIA
43 CHINESE TAIPEI
44 VENEZUELA
45 IRELAND
46 KAZHAKSTAN
47 COLOMBIA
48 GEORGIA
49 ECUADOR
50 URUGUAY

51 POLAND
52 PORTUGAL
53 FINLAND
54 MACEDONIA
55 ARMENIA
56 ESTONIA
57 CUBA
58 LATVIA
59 NORWAY
60 BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA

61 HONG KONG
62 TUNISIA
63 LITHUANIA
64 EGYPT
65 ALGERIA
66 BOLIVIA
67 TURKEY

What about Tunisia?

They don't have a male representative that I'm aware of

#35 for Canada...could be worse I suppose, lol. The problem is mens singles for us, we have all doubles specialists. Lareau and Nestor are both top 10 doubles talents, but in singles, neither of them have overly exceptional, though have shown signs that they can beat top players in the past. I'd like to see Nestor reach top 100 again, he's a tough lefty with a nice serve, and I think if he's healthy he can do it. Also, this year was for the most part a brutal year for the women. Jeyaseelan, Kolbovic, Drake, and Webb all dropped down, while Nejedly remains a consistent 75-100 ranked player, and Pelletier is the only one who made significant improvement clibing up about 75 spots to around 150. Hopefully we will rebound in 2002.

But he loves you."

Hey VSFan1 : Tunisia came to be 62nd. They were represented by Oualid Jallali (1309) and Selima Sfar (82).

Was anyone as surprised as me that Paraguay made the Top 20? They are the second best South American nation behind Argentina. Wow.

Interesting stat about Ireland: Kelly Liggan was ranked 2-3-7. Her male counterpart, Peter Clarke, was ranked 3-2-7.

Hi veryborednow : You know, I was surprised that GB wasn't a little higher. They had Louise Latimer up around 112 last year. If she'd been as high this year, GB would've made the lower part of the Top 20. However, Tim Henman (9) and Julie Pullin (159) got them to 23rd this year. I'd say that was pretty good.

G'day Randy : The highest ranked Canadian male was Daniel Nestor this year (and he is predominantly a doubles player), and unfortunately his singles rank was quite low (219), but I recall that he might have been as high as around the 50's at one stage last year. Nejedly was ranked nicely, but not as high as she could've been either. Jeyaseelan's ranking from last year might have helped. Based on potential, Canada could've been as high as the Top 20. But you're right, 35th isn't too bad.

Hi NejedlyKanepi : I'll leave you to do the doubles rankings. hehe.

Forgot to mention that I didn't include the rank for Roxy Dragomir-Ilie for Romania, because of her retirement.

And one (or maybe a few) last thing(s): Out of the Top 10 nations on the list, 7 will be competing at the Hopman Cup in about a week and a bits' time. And of those 7 nations, 2 have fielded their current No. 1 players. Altogether however, 3 of the 9 Hopman Cup nations have fielded their current No. 1 players (Australia, Belgium, Greece). 3 other nations (Switzerland, Spain, Argentina) have at least fielded one of their current No. 1 players (Federer, Sanchez Vicario and Suarez, respectively). The Hopman Cup nations are ranked 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 13 and 31 on the list.

Good post Braveheart. Very interesting to see that Germany are just holding on to a Top 10 spot. With Huber and Graf now gone (not to mention Becker and Stich) they are not as strong as they once were.

Just bumping this up so that others can check this out. I'll be doing a doubles nation rankings soon. It would be interesting wouldn't it, NejedlyKanepi?
