Sandrine's a really great player, but unfortunately has never been able to be a steady top 10 player, for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, she doesn't win enough titles. Sandrine though a consistant quarter and semifinalist through the season, doesn't win many titles, they are far and few between, mainly because she plays a lot of events with strong fields, or is unable to come through often enough as one of the top seeds.

Second, she is basically just very consistent, but generally doesn't produce any late round finishes at slams. She's almost always around into the 4th round, but come time she has to play a top 8 seed in a big match, she is unable to come through.

This leads to the next point, which is although Sandrine is an excellent player, she is unable to come through in tight matches against the top couple players in the world. So many times we see Sandrine play amazing tennis, stretching a top player to a difficult 3 setter, because she takes chances when she is behind, and makes a lot of great shots. Unfortunately, she starts to fade when it is in a tight 3 setter, and the shots she was going for before, suddenly start to miss the line by a couple centimetres, and that costs her matches.

I think she will always be a very consistent top 20 player, with the occasional jump into the bottom of the top 10, but she just seems to lack a real big weapon to knock out the big names, and doesn't win enough smaller events to compensate for that. She will however, be certainly known as one of the very most dangerous outsiders in the game today, and without a doubt one of the kindest too.

I was going to interject with a long winded post here about the greatness yet apparent inability of Sandrine to consistently hold down a top ten place when i read randy's post. It summed it up brilliantly.

While Sandrine is great, her performances at grandslams sums up her position on the world stage; a top 16 player. She is always in the last 16 at majors but top ten players make quarterfinals which she has only done on a couple of occassions in her career.

Randy H did sum it up beautifully. Sandrine is an amazing talent and I am hoping that her victories over Capriati this fall will give Sandrine some much needed confidence. Often times in watching Sandrine's matches against the top players, I really think she lacks the confidence to close out those tight matches. I am hoping that will all change next year.

Great post Randy.

She ended the year great though, with a title in Hawaii, and defeating Capriati twice; hopefully, she will continue with this momentum and reach the quarters in the Australian.

Perfect post Randy
No doubt Testud will continue to charm with her
Gallic ways and "test" the top ten, but she's a 4 step pony(win 3 and fall in the 4th round)of the slams.

Randy H is so right - Sandrine always almost wins against the top players but never makes that final step .

I agree with you guys. I love Sandrine's game ... she got some solid shots and she's never beaten easily! But she really must improve in the majors. A round of 16 is not enough to break through the top10 (even though I put her at #10 in another post!!!You guys should have a look at Tennisaddict post "PREDICTING TOP 10 2002 ANALYSIS"...very very interesting). But coming back to Sandrine, I think actually that her lost against Venus at USO (round of 16...again!) was the kind of match that perfectly reflects her results against almost every top10 player: a tough first set (lost 4-6), with even a lead for testud at the beginning of the set and then a catastrophic 2nd set (lost 0-6) where she completly lost her momentum and let the frustration take over! Why exactly can't she pull a big upset more often? I don't really know....

Well if crackedOne is right, next year should the year for Sandrine then! I heard 2002 is her last season (and her last chance for a breakthrough)!

I know I'm a little late posting in this thread - I just discovered it in search!

I too must jump on the Randy bandwagon...Sandrine hasn't made enough noise in the slams to warrant a top 10 ranking. It's obvious she can play toe to toe with the best in the game on a any given day but she needs to close out tight matches against the elite players more regularly to attain that status.

I too am hopeful that her wins over Justine and two victories over Jennifer late last year will give her the boost she needs to make that big splash at a slam this year, as it very well may be her last.

Sandrine is such a wonderful lady and I love her to death - even if she doesn't make Top 10 this year.

Indeed, Randy summed it up brilliantly.

I can't think of a word to add.

If this is her last year it may be a possible for Sandrine to move into 9 or 10. A lot of winning and losing in women's tennis comes down to nerves, and often women like Testud produce their best before riding off into the sunset, in part because they finally relax, knowing the end is near. Julie Halard was a good example of that.
