Unhappy Masha to Launch her Own Perfume

It is sad when Masha's new perfume eclipses the day's results from Zurich in the headlines

Success smells sweet for Sharapova

ZURICH (AFP) - Wimbledon (news - web sites) champion Maria Sharapova is to follow in the footsteps of Andre Agassi and Gabriela Sabatini and launch a perfume in her name.

"I'll have my perfume next year, and I'm excited because it is so different to what I've done in the past," said the 17-year old in Zurich where she is competing in a 1.3 million-dollar WTA event. "It's going to be my own design and something I love to smell.

"The company that I'm working with, we always keep in touch by e-mail because I travel so much. You tell them the smells you like, if you want it to be sweet, things like that. And then the bottle, the colours, the shape. It's a very interesting process. I haven't had a sniffing test' yet, but I will."

Sharapova is seeded four in a field weakened by the withdrawal of Lindsay Davenport and Serena Williams (news - web sites). Second seeded Davenport became a no-show after developing a cold, and fifth seed Williams pulled out with a continuing knee injury.

Top seed Amelie Mauresmo is also doubtful after suffering a strained abductor in her left leg during her semi-final against Svetlana Kuznetsova in Filderstadt 10 days ago.

She played only one set of the final before conceding to Davenport, and then withdrew from Moscow and was still undergoing treatment in Paris on Monday.

This week, Davenport took over the number one ranking from Mauresmo. It is the sixth time that the 28-year old American has been ranked number one, and the first time since January 2002.

With a month remaining in the season, Davenport has a good chance to end the year at number one. If she is successful, it would mark the third time in her career that she has held the year-end number one spot after also achieving the feat in 1998 and 2001.

"To be honest, I didn't think I would find myself in this position so late in my career, to still be in with a realistic chance of winning Slams and a very real possibility of finishing the year at number one," Davenport said. "I'm very excited to have this opportunity."

Sharapova will play Daniela Hantuchova in the second round, after the Slovak dismissed Russia's Vera Douchevina 6-1, 6-4.

In other first round matches, Nathalie Dechy of France beat 15-year-old Swiss wild card Timea Bacsinszky 6-1, 6-4, Colombia's Fabiola Zuluaga defeated Mary Pierce of France 6-3, 6-2, and Alicia Molik of Australia overcame Italian Silvia Farina Elia 6-1, 7-6 (7/5).

Meanwhile, Sharapova is having to combine the glamour of the tennis circuit with finishing her education. After competing on court, she has to return to her hotel room and take out her books.

"I've done it for a while now so I'm quite used to it," she said. "In the hotel room I have a lot of time. It takes some self-discipline, but I've been home-schooled nearly all my life and I'm really used to telling myself, Now you're going to sit down and do your homework'.

"There are a few times when you are lazy and don't want to do anything, and I get a lot of those times. But when I'm home I have my mum and she's the one that gets on to me with the school work. So when I'm back home I have to make sure everything's on time and I don't get punished."

we've seen these articles a thousand times.

As a Maria fan I'm not particularly happy about it but IMG seems to be on a mission to destroy Maria's career much like they did to Anna, and there's not much I can do about it

Why is it that the world never remembered the name of Johann Gambolputty de von Ausfern-
kalbsfleisch-mittler-aucher von Hautkopft of Ulm?

Eau de Sharapova.

I can think of two possibilities that ought to sell VERY well.

Proud to be an American
Not blind. Not uninformed. We are party to atrocities. But the response of the world after 9/11 is worth noting. Even our most dire enemies offered aid. We should all be so lucky.
