Post One poll from year 99..

No tennis now, and I am watching my old tapes. Today that was a tape from Wimbledon 99, second round. Several interesting matches - Kournikova-Vento, Graf-De Swaardt, V. Williams-Tatarkova. Very fun commentary by Billie Jean. One thing that amazed was that it was the next day after Hingis was defeated by Dokic, and they were already running poll - "Will Martina Hingis win another Slam?". Yes, she lost to Dokic, but she was coming out of FO final, that she should have won, and winning AO. What reason did they have to run that poll at that time? When they do it now, it is explicable, at least now it really looks like a clear possibility, that Martina won't win another Slam. But back then!? Pretty prophetic, I'd say.

Quite strange!

Tartarkova is a hard hitter,i've seen that match a few times and she hit a few great winners past venus and gave venus a bit of a scare! Not much though!

Vento against Anna? Had 5:4 40:0 in the first set, but still lost in straights. Anna looked very focused. Again after match in interview they asked her about first title ( I mean, it was two years ago, and even then it was everybody's talk ), and she answered her usual bullshit ("I have to work hard and I will win many titles"). The one that actually looked the most interesting was Steffi-Mariaan match. De Swaardt looked so good in the first.

I have to admit I figure that whoever started that poll was biased against Martina. She had won OZ three straight times. She made the finals at RG '99.

But history will judge whoever started that poll as wiser than me. Martina DIDN'T win another GS title. She still may. But in 1999, I wondered if she'd have more GS titles than BJK. Now, I doubt she'll equal Monica.

She looked so unmotivated at wimbledon 99 that maybe the pollmakers expected her to retire soon after

Well, these places tend to run a different poll every day, and if they did one on Martina all that meant was that there was enough outside possibility to give them a poll for that day. I guess I can agree with that, since she was at that time on a 1 for 6 slump in the Slams.

You have to answer for Santino, Carlo.

Thumbs up

Billie Jean Kings instincts are usally dead on, if she started the poll I can understand why she thought it was legit to do so.
