Players whose game was hindered by that ONE weakness.

this time, we go with the forehand.

ok, which players had a good all around game but had a disgusting forehand that cost them many wins?

please give this thread life guys of we'll have more "who're the top 10 most beautifull players" threads re-emerging.

back to the question, i'd say ASV and Venus.

Justine used to have a pretty bad forehand as well, topspin crosscourt was the only shot she could hit with it. fortunately she worked on it.

i think Kim also has a pretty negligible forehand.

Natasha Zvereva was one of the greatest talents ever on tour in the Steffi
era. I would say her weakness was no gut! She should've won and been
up there along with Steffi/ASV and Monica. Sad....lack of gut turned into
lack of ambition which in turn led to just taking the easy road, and never
wanting to take the big titles.

*I'm bringing Natasha up because there are a handful of players
in the top 16 that may end up having this type of career if they
don't start stepping up to the plate and really giving everything
they've got and win that big grand slam title.

Gabby Sabantini and her serve.

She would have won more than one slam with a decent serve.

Guys, this is about forehands only.

1. VENUS VENUS VENUS VENUS VENUS!!!!! (it actually says alot about her determination and her good strokes that she has won four majors with a terrible second serve and forehand combo.)

I don't know others.

Mary Joe Fernandez and Amy Frazier and Kim Clijsters-too nice. Not to say you have to be a total bitch, but to get to the level of hoisting up grand slam singles titles, there has to be that killer instinct there. Unfortunately, I don't think any of the above have (had) this. Kim may be talented enough to get away with not having it though.

Venus' forehand has only become more of a liability recently. When its good, its very good. Not great technqiue but she's still pretty damn effective with it and has still been winning (albeit nothing major).

I'd say Arantxa's FH and Hingis FH really let them down. They could be so short and with topspin, they would pop up ready for a power hitter to feast upon.

When they flattened their forehands out a little and added more depth, it was an okay shot. With more improvement, they could have used their FHs even more and racked up some more titles.

I mean imagine Arantxa's FH vs Steffi's!! No wonder Steffi dominated their rivalry!!

I agree she was a player who could have achieved so much more, the double bagel Steffi served up in the french open final did not help matters.

nathalie tauziat and jana novotna had suspect forehands. tauziat's was far too flat and slappy! jana's had a big wind-up/backswing but with little in the way of reward.

ASV would whip the ball up with too much topspin on the cross-court forehand. sometimes she'd lose all confidence and resort to just blocking it back to keep it in court. which was fine against most players because they 'hated' that paceless forehand landed deep near the baseline. if you were willing to go to net on an approach to ASVs forehand, you'd get soem rich pickings. all of this became more apparent in the last 5-6 years of her career. prior to about 1995, she was actually quite steady all round on that wing.

hingis - the forehand wasn't powerful, but she'd rarely miss with it, so not really a weakness. it was not a glaring weakness compared with the rest of her game anyway.

Sometimes I get so sick of the multiple personalities on this site- all originating from the same stagnant mind.

There is nothing more beautiful than Evonne Goolagong in full flight moving across a tennis court.

In all honesty the forehand shot is rarely a players 'weakness'. It's usually one of the first shots you learn when you pick up a racket and even if it's not a players strength it's usually not their biggest weakness either. Aggressive players have to rely more on execution, so if they don't have good technique on their forehands they can find themselves creating a world of trouble for themselves (Venus would be a good example of that).
