Unhappy Last Tier 1 German Open to take place in Berlin in 2005 - tournament sold to Qatar

I really like the German Open, lots of history there.

Germany sells $1.3m WTA tournament to Qatar

BERLIN: The German Tennis Federation (DTB) has sold its 1.3-million-dollar Berlin WTA event, a traditional French Open warm-up event, to the Gulf state of Qatar for 6.7 million euros, DTB president Georg von Waldenfels told Saturday's Bild newspaper.

The tournament will be held for the last time in 2005 from May 2 to 8 before it switches to the Middle East. The event, played on clay in Germany and acting as a major tune-up for the second Grand Slam event of the season in the French capital which starts at the end of May, could not be switched in time for 2005.

Furthermore, a new date may have to be found for the event as the early summer heat in the Gulf would make it impossible to play outdoors in May. The money raised from the sale will go towards helping finance ATP men's tournaments in Berlin and Hamburg as well as funding junior tennis in the country. This is not the first time Germany has sold a WTA event having already accepted five million dollars from Philadelphia to take their Hamburg WTA event.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I doubt the WTA tour will be too happy that this has been sold to help finance the men's events in Germany or maybe they think as long as someone is buying the event, who cares?

but i heared they will try to have a Tier II event in Berlin

and there are planning to built a new Venue for a Men/Women Tournament in Hamburg
they Venues would be near AOL-Arena (football) and Colorline-Arena (Icehockey/Handball - indoor Arena) both placed in the "Volkspark" a big park in Hamburg

Something was bound to go right sometime today, All these broken pieces fit together to make a perfect picture of us
It got cold and then dark so suddenly and rained, It rained so hard the two of us were the only thing
That we could see for miles and miles
And in the middle of the flood I felt my worth, When you held onto me like I was your little life raft
Please know that you were mine as well
Drops of water hit the ground like God's own tears
And spread out into shapes like Salad bowls and basins and buckets for bailing out the flood

the probelm in germany is we have no good player - specially on female tour
and without good player, noone want to watch it on TV
and without viewer no TV Channel pay for the TV rights
and without broadcasting on TV no big sponsor will pay for the Torunament because noone would see the name of the company on Tv - because of NO-Broadcast.

thats the problem

The article is not correct. Sure is that it will no longer be a Tier I after 2005, but there is an option to make a Tier II in 2006. I think it depends on how the tournament is in 2005.

i heared the plans for a Women/Men Tournament are from 2009 on
i think thats why DTB is trying to keep the Mens Masterseries Tournament alive.
because this is the only chance for a big Torunament in the future

Thanks. I changed the thread title to 'Last Tier 1'. I hope they do keep an event in Berlin. The stadium is really nice and it always attracted great fields.

How could they change the date, unless they make it earlier it would make no sense.

That's not important, Doha was upgraded this year because they have enough financial support for it to happen. At this rate, they might even have a grand slam in 10 years.
Not a good decision though, shifting clay tournaments to hardcourt tournaments is never good for the players. They are tipping the surface balance, and if there is only one red clay Tier I event left in Rome, Roland Garros will just be overlooked even more.

Looks like an argument for a joint tournament with the ATP and all the problems with that. We have Wimbledon with no British hopes in the womens and no realistic hope of a winner in the mens and we seem OK but to make a historic national tournament work you may need the men there too.
