Why does everyone hate Maria Sharapova now?

Do people on this site love a player until they win a slam? Personally I like Maria. I think she's a great player, and focused. For those of you who dislike her, why?

Not only does she get as much shit as Serena does, but check out the hated players thread, she is on a lot of them.

No hate from me, just a bit overhyped by the media. She hasn't really done anything for people to not like her yet

Myskina * Henin-Hardenne * Zvonerava

Davenport - Dementieva

Just to disprove the (I think) theory, I'm a Kim fan (yes the slamless wonder ) and I dont hate Maria at all. I watched her at Wimbly and thought she did really well and deserved to win on the day.

Now, Kim v Maria, on another day, in another GS final, grrr........

What's there to hate about her? It all has to do with jealousy. So,in fact being hated is sort of a compliment really. Must mean she's done something special

Everybody will have his/her own reasons...But I think the media hype plays a big part in it...

That doesn't mean it isn't ignorant to hate/dislike somebody personally because of what the media does...

I can understand them. I used to like Maria way more than I've been since she won Wimbledon. I think the reason is that she's way too overhyped on the press. But actually I don't think that's a reason to hate her, I still like her anyway.

I reated a thread a couple weeks ago askingmyself that question.

What is it about Maria Sharapova I don't like?

I've had some time to think aout it, and I've pretty much concluded that it isn't HER I don't like. This isn't the second coming of Anna Kournikova. Sharapova is a better player, and I'm not being buried with 'Sharapova Sex Symbol' advertising.

Which actually brings up what I don't like. It isn't HER. It's the thinly masked hope onthe part of commentators and announcers for her ascension to the top of the tour. I honestly think Tracy Austin ddn't even NOTICE Anastasia Myskina won RG. Comes right down to it, Sharapova plays like a young Venus Williams. What's not to like? She'll never be Venus in my heart, but at her best, she's competitive with anyone on the tour. While I'd love to see Venus win every GS tournament for the next years, failing that, I wouldn't mind seeing Sharapova vs S. Williams with both playing well. There wouldn't be a lot of net play in such a match, but there'd be some much fuzz knocked off tennis balls they'd have to sweep the court between sets.

Proud to be an American
Not blind. Not uninformed. We are party to atrocities. But the response of the world after 9/11 is worth noting. Even our most dire enemies offered aid. We should all be so lucky.

I don't personally dislike her. I think she is a lovely, mature, elegant, classy, and excellent tennis player. She also plays like a champion and has tons of guts.
What I dislike are the way people put too much hype on her ( like the media and some of her fans). She won Wimbledon, and some make it look like she is the best in the world
I feel bad for her with all this pressure.

MARIA SHARAPOVA: "Amélie, you know it doesn't really matter at this point. I mean, I'd love to, I mean, Amélie is No. 1 in the world. She's playing great tennis. You know, I love that challenge of going out there and competing against the best in the world."
You'd love to what, Maria?
